1
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Writing Conclusions What are your key points for writing conclusions?
2
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means P.E.E What does your results show? How does the independent variable change your dependent variable? Evidence What evidence do you have to support your point? Explanation Why did you get theses results? What should our key words be? Who would find your results useful? Why would they find your results useful?
3
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Learning Outcomes State what resolution means Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved
4
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Writing Evaluations A reaction produces bubbles. How could you catch the gas given off? How could you measure the amount of gas given off?
5
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Evaluating an Experiment Evaluations are written at the end of an experiment (usually after a conclusion). The purpose of the evaluation is the critise the experiment so we can improve it, if we were able to do it again. An evaluation has three main parts – strengths, weaknesses and how to improve.
6
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means What would you discuss when evaluating an experiment?
7
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Were measurements accurate? Was the sample size large enough to get evidence? Was it fair? Did you have a suitable range to test? Could you rely up your evidence? What would you discuss when evaluating an experiment?
8
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Resolution This is the smallest change that a measuring instrument can measure. Instruments with a higher resolution are more likely to give a value close to the true value. In other words they would give you a more accurate measurement
9
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Explain that resolution is the smallest measurement that can be made.
10
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means
11
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Evaluations Why do we write evaluations? 1. 2. 3.
12
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Metal carbonate Time for the limewater to go cloudy (s) 2 spatulas of metal carbonate 50ml of acid How long did it take the limewater to go cloudy?
13
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Temperature ( ⁰ C) How high the ball bounces (cm) Room - 40 - 60 - 1 bouncy ball. Measure the room temperature. Place the bouncy ball in each different temperature for 1 minute. Measure how high the ball bounces when dropped from 1 metre. At which temperature does the ball bounce the highest?
14
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Which experiment was the best? Why? Discuss in groups.
15
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Evaluation – evaluate the experiment you have been assigned in your group. Discuss: Range Accuracy Fairness Sample size Reliability And any other points you feel need raising. Strengths Weaknesses Improvements
16
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation Suggest and explain ways an experiment can be improved Outcomes State what resolution means Swap your evaluation with another group. Have they described all of the weaknesses? Have they suggested suitable improvements? Can you think of any more ways to improve the investigation?
