1 bradfordgrammar.com Candidate Brief for the position of Teacher of Physics Start Date: September 2016 Ref: REQ000092

2 bradfordgrammar.com Department The Physics and Electronics Department is one of the most successful at BGS. It has a highly-qualified and committed team of teachers who are passionate about Physics and even more so about the teaching of it. The Physics and Electronics Department presently comprises seven full time specialist teachers. We are supported by one full time, and two part time technicians. Physics and Electronics are taught in six ‘specialist’, newly refurbished laboratories located on the first floor of the Kenneth Robinson Building (KRB). Teachers can expect to have their own laboratory where the majority of their teaching will occur. Practical equipment is provided by our technicians from a central prep room and the department as a whole is extremely well resourced. As part of the Physics suite in the KRB there is a staff work room which provides each member of staff with a dedicated work and storage area plus computer access. Physics is taught as a separate subject throughout the school. We have our own two year curriculum for year 7 and year 8 students which is loosely based on the National Curriculum, with an emphasis on developing the pupils’ practical skills and having fun with the subject. Tests at the end of the summer term are on the material covered during the academic year. All pupils at BGS follow courses up to GCSE in all three science disciplines. We currently teach the EDEXCEL IGCSE syllabus from year 9. In 2015 our year 11 pupils achieved 89% A*/A at this level. The number of pupils who opt to study AS and A-Level Physics varies between about fifty and sixty, and we are one of the largest exam subject choices in the 6 th form. We teach the new linear AQA A-Level Physics syllabus and have 4 to 5 sets per year group; on average, sets contain 12 pupils. Each set is taught by two members of staff. The school’s current policy is for all students to sit the AS exams at the end of year 12 and for those that choose to continue studying A-Level Physics these exams are sat at the end of year 13. In 2015 our year 13 pupils achieved 81% A*-C. Many of our A-Level pupils go on to read science and engineering courses at university. OCR Electronics is taught at AS and A-Level only to a set of about eight in its own dedicated laboratory.
