* 7 th Grade Personal Health

* Goals * Goal setting is the process of working toward something you want to accomplish. * 2 types of goals * Short Term goals * Goals you plan to accomplish in a short period of time (hours, days or weeks) * Example: Doing well on a test, or writing an email to a friend * Long Term goals * Goals you plan to achieve within a period of months or years. * Example: Learn how to play an instrument, become a professional athlete

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 1: Identify a SPECIFIC goal and write it down. * Instead of saying “I want to be a better baseball player” be more specific. * My goal is “To make the spring baseball team by working on my hitting and fielding skills”.

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 2: List the steps you will take to reach your goal. * Example: * I need to improve on my batting skills by going to the park with a friend and practicing twice a week for 30 minutes. * I need to improve my fielding skills by going to the park twice a week for 30 minutes with a friend and fielding ground balls and pop ups.

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 3: Get help and support from others. * Identify specific people/places that will help you to achieve your goal. * Be specific and name a friend (my friend Joe) * Be specific and name a family member (my mom) * Be specific and name a weekday (on Mondays and Wednesdays) * Be specific and name a time you are working on your goal (30 minutes; 3:30-4:00pm) * Be specific and name the skills you will work on and break them down (grounding, my friend will roll the ball to me so I will work on my grounding skills with my glove on the ground and my other hand scooping the ball up)

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 4: Identify and overcome specific obstacles. * Do you have all the equipment needed (i.e. a glove, ball and bat), if not how will you get it? * What happens if your friend cannot make it that day? * What will you do if it rains/snows on a practice day? * What if there is no where to practice at the park, where will you go?

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 5: Evaluate Your Progress. * How will you keep track of your improvements? * Example: You will keep track of how many times you hit the ball vs how many times you did not. I hit the ball 15 times out of the 25 pitches I was given. * Example: I grounded 8 balls successfully out of 10.

* The Goal Setting Process * Step 6: Give yourself a Reward * Celebrate your accomplishments. * Example: Once I field all 10 ground balls I will get/do…. * Example: Once I hit 10 balls pitched in a row I will…. * Example: Once I make the team I will get a new glove.

* Health Triangle Social Health Emotional /Mental Health Physical Health

* Health Triangle * Physical Health – The overall healthiness of your body. Are you fit? Do you eat a well-balanced meal and snacks? Do you attend yearly check ups with a doctor and dentist? * Emotional/Mental Health – Do you accept yourself? Can you handle challenges appropriately? Do you find positive solutions to problems? How do you handle your thoughts, feelings, and how you express yourself? Do you have a positive attitude? * Social Health – Do you get along with friends, classmates, teachers and family? Do you spend time with family? Do you support those who you care about? Do you communicate, respect and value other people?

* What is Physical Activity? * Physical Activity is any form of bodily movement that uses up energy. * Health experts advise that teens get 60 minutes of physical activity on most days. * Divide up the time into 10-15 minutes of activity.

* Why is Physical Activity Important? * It helps to keep all sides of the health triangle healthy. * Physical Health: Gives you more energy. Helps your heart and lungs work more efficiently and strengthens bones. Improves coordination (the smooth and effective working together of your muscles and bones). Improves balance (the feeling of stability and control over your body). Helps you sleep better and more soundly. Helps maintain a healthy body weight by burning calories (units of heat that measure the energy available in food).

* Why is Physical Activity Important? * Emotional/Mental Health: * Physically active people are better able to handle stress and challenges of everyday life. They tend to have higher self esteem. Being physically active will help you think more clearly and concentrate better in school. * Social Health: * Whether you are on a team or working out with a partner, physical activity can benefit your social health. Physical activity can help you meet new people with similar interests. It also improves your ability to resolve conflict effectively and work with others as a team.

* What is Physical Fitness? * Physical Fitness is the ability to handle the physical demands of everyday life without becoming overly tired. * People who are physically fit have enough energy to do the things they want to do. They also have a reserve of energy for times when their bodies need it. * People who are physically fit tend to live longer and healthier lives.

* Activity * You are going to write 4 goals for the fitness test following the goal making process. * You need a goal for EACH fitness test (pacer, push ups, curl ups, and backsaver sit and reach) * The goals need to be specific and follow all the steps in the goal making process * This should take you awhile to do all four fitness test goals. If you are done in 5-10 minutes you probably did not do it correctly. *Example: I will do 3 sets of 10 push ups every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday once I get home from school. I will track how many I can do versus how many I cannot. I will achieve this by end of April.

* What is Conflict? * A conflict is a disagreement between people with opposing viewpoints, ideas, or goals. * Warning signs of building conflict: * Physical Signs: A knot in the stomach, faster heart rate, a lump in the throat, Balled up fists, cold or sweaty palms, a sudden surge of energy. * Emotional Signs: Feeling concerned, getting defensive, wanting to cry, not feeling valued, wanting to lash out, wanting to escape. * How can you prevent conflicts from building?

* Preventing Conflicts from Building * You can prevent conflicts from building by dealing with the problem in appropriate ways. * Learn to understand your feelings * Recognize why you are angry. * Keep your conflicts private * Find a separate place to talk to the person one on one about your differences, do not include others. * Avoid using alcohol or other drugs * These can affect a person’s emotions, judgment and decision making abilities. * Show respect for yourself and for others * This will help build healthy relationships and help resolve conflict faster. * Learn to accept others * Enjoying people who have different views and customs than you can enrich your life. * Try putting yourself in the other person’s situation * If you understand the other person’s point of view you may be more sympathetic, understanding, and will to resolve the conflict.

* What is Conflict Resolution? * Conflict Resolution involves solving a disagreement in a way that satisfies both sides. * You can use the acronym T.A.L.K. to help resolve conflict. * Can you think of how you resolve your conflicts that satisfy both sides?

* T.A.L.K. * T – Take a time out * Wait about 30 minutes before discuss the situation with the other person, this will allow you time to calm down and think more clearly. * A – Allow each person to tell their side * Each person should be allowed a chance to explain their feelings without interruption. * L – Let each person ask questions * Each person should have a chance to question the other. Stay calm and respectful. * K – Keep Brainstorming * Be open to trying different solutions that will satisfy both people. Do not let your emotions prevent you from finding a solution.

* Activity * Write about a time you had a conflict with someone else. * Include what process you used to have an outcome to the conflict * Could you have used the steps to prevent conflict to make it so this conflict you had would have never happened? Explain why yes or why no. * Could you have used T.A.L.K. to solve your conflict? Explain why yes or why no.
