8  Archaeology is the study of past societies through analyzing remains, settlements, fossils, and artifacts.  Archaeologists use carbon dating to determine the approximate age of artifacts.  No written records until 1,000 BCE, thus these findings and interpretations are how we understand the prehistoric era.

9  Three early examples of cities found by archaeologists (8,000 to 7,000 BCE): ◦ Jericho and Aleppo - located on the west bank of the Jordan River in present-day Palestine. ◦ Catal Huyuk in present- day Turkey.

18 TThe Paleolithic Era (“Old Stone Age”) lasted between 400,000 and 8,000 BCE. EEra begins with the first use of stone tools and ends with the emergence of agriculture and domesticated animals. OOccurred during the Ice Age. ◦G◦Glaciers covered much of the earth’s surface

19  Invented the first simple, stone tools.  Lived by hunting and gathering wild food. Groups were nomadic Moved from one place to another following sources of food, shelter, water. Families combined to form clans of two to three dozen that created early social groups  Used caves as shelter ◦ Fire served for warmth and protection.
