2. The Prevent Duty Guidance (under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 ) was released by the Government in March 2015 which places a duty on schools, and other agencies, to “have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.

3. This legal duty came into force on 1st July. The duty placed on schools covers 4 areas: Risk Assessment Working in Partnership Staff Training IT Policies

4. At the beginning of July 2015, the Department for Education released further guidance to help clarify the role of schools under the new “Prevent Duty”. This departmental advice: clarifies what the prevent duty means for schools and childcare providers outlines what they can do to help protect children from the risk of radicalisation makes clear what schools and childcare providers should do to demonstrate compliance with the duty

5. All staff will be required to complete NCALT Channel/Prevent General Awareness E- Learning Module NCALT Channel/Prevent General Awareness E- Learning Module This online piece of training includes information on how Channel links to the government’s counter-terrorism strategy (CONTEST) through the Prevent strategy. It also provides guidance on how to identify people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and how to refer them into the Channel programme.

6. Schools and childcare providers have a duty in helping to build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling them to challenge extremist views. It is important to emphasise that the Prevent duty is not intended to stop pupils debating controversial issues.

7. As such all pupils will be following a programme of study in PSHE during form time throughout the year that supports the Prevent duty for schools. This will commence on 14 th September.

8. NCALT Channel/Prevent General Awareness E- Learning Module NCALT Channel/Prevent General Awareness E- Learning Module This training takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. All members of staff will be completing this during departmental meeting time. Upon completing the training you will need to print off the certificate after entering your name and the name of the school. This then needs to be passed to Lesley by 16 th September for collation.
