Creature Features – 2/8/16 Key Question: How are traits passed down to offspring? Initial Thoughts:
3
Evidence 1- Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction (usually single-celled organism) – organisms makes an exact copy of themselves e.g. bacteria, amoeba –Offspring (clones) is identical to the parent cell –offspring (clones) inherits all traits from parent cell –Hydra (multi-celled) reproduces by budding (new organism branches out from parents body) –Strawberry plant creates rootlike runner that can reproduce identical plants.
4
Evidence 1- Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction –offspring inherit traits from both parents –not a perfect blend of parents’ traits either –occurs when a sperm cell unites with an egg cell –No two sperm or egg cells contain the exact same information (genes), no two offspring produced by the same parents are identical (except for identical twins) –Offspring are more diverse than offspring from asexual reproduction
5
Evidence 1- Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction Artificial asexual reproduction- Cloning –Take a cell from a sheep –Take nucleus (DNA) out of cell –Egg cell from another sheep with nucleus removed –Nucleus is injected into egg cell –Dolly!
6
Evidence 2: Poppy & Skye Part One: The 1 st Generation Using the details from the story, draw what you think Poppy & Skye look like. Use labels to help identify traits. Island 1Island 2 What do you think the tails of Poppy & Skye’s offspring will look like?
7
Part Two: The 2 nd Generation Using the details from the story, draw the 2 nd generation. Why do all the offspring have blue tails? What is your hypothesis of how this happened?
8
Part Three: The 3 rd Generation Using the details from the story, draw the 3 rd generation. What happened this time? Does the evidence support the hypothesis from part 2? What is a better hypothesis of what is going on?
9
Analysis Questions 1.How are the traits passed down to offspring? 2.What happens as traits get passed down to other generations? 3.Do you think this model works for more complicated animals like humans? Explain.
10
Summary What did you think about how traits are passed down to offspring before? What did you learn from your evidence about how traits are passed down? What are some further thoughts or questions you have how traits are passed down?
11
Reflection What do you predict will happen to the orange tail trait in the next generation?
