MITOSIS! Review Mitosis has 4 stages: – Prophase – Metaphase – Anaphase – Telophase Mitosis is the process by which the nucleus of a cell divides into TWO IDENTICAL nuclei
2
Why is it important that the nucleus divides into IDENTICAL nuclei? Remember: the nucleus contains the genetic information – Genetic information = GENES! (section of DNA) – Genes are located on chromosomes, which are long linear strands of DNA So the cell has all the information it needs to create NEW cells!
3
On the back of your mitosis worksheet please write these headings: PROPHASE METAPHASE ANAPHASE TELOPHASE
4
PROPHASE Chromosomes have made a copy (replicated) and are now visible
5
METAPHASE Replicated chromosomes line up in the center of the cell
6
ANAPHASE The identical chromosomes separate and begin to move toward opposite ends of the cell
7
TELOPHASE Chromosomes are harder to see as the nucleus membrane forms around them Now what happens?
8
Cytokinesis! After the nucleus has divided, it is followed by the cytoplasm dividing
