Progressive Movement A movement of reform that swept the nation during the first part of the Twentieth Century What are some problems we discussed that existed in the early part of the Twentieth Century? –Crime, Slums, Working Conditions, Corruption The progressives aimed to fix all of these problems.

Who were the Progressives Progressives were middle-class, educated white people Came from both parties.

Roosevelt Was always progressive minded in his political career. Pure Food and Drug Act Busting the Trusts (monopolies) First president to protect the environment.

Taft Presidency Page 296 in book. Busted more trusts than TR Scandal involving the conservation movement. Was not viewed favorably by Progressives. His progressive record was strong despite the perception.

Because Roosevelt and Taft split the Republican vote, Democrat Woodrow Wilson easily won the Election of 1912. The Election would turn out to be more important than many realized: World War I occurred in this term.
