2 F IGURE OF H ESTIA ON VASE Hestia on this clay Athenian vase is sitting in a chair, holding a branch from a tree. Looking at the way Athenians painted Hestia, they did it carefully, but almost cartoon-like. But if I were someone who didn’t know anything about Hestia and saw this vase, I would describe her as someone who was very involved in nature. This picture spoke to me because of the yellow-orange tint to Hestia, making the image seem so old. I chose this because Greek art on vases is something that I find fascinating. Hestia on an Athenian vase made in 525-475 BC, Tarquinia, Museo Nazionale Tarquiniese

3 H ESTIA HOLDING A FIRE A grandmotherly god dressed in modest clothes, holding a warm fire that lights up the dim room. Who else can it be but Hestia? This image immediately popped out when I was searching for a modern picture of Hestia. It was the first image I’ve seen of a female goddess who looked old. However, Hestia doesn’t look stern. In fact, her face still looks young in the light and soft. Also, the fire she is holding completes her image as the goddess of hearth. This is one of my favorite images of a god that I’ve chosen. Although it is not ‘ancient’, this picture gives off a warm and familiar feeling. Hestia, drawn by Hrana Janto in 1997
