2 | Presentation title – 00/00/2012 What is an Apprenticeship? National Apprenticeship Service A work-based training programme designed around the needs of employers, which leads to nationally recognised qualifications. Can be a new recruit or existing member of staff. Offered at three levels, Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3) and Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4) usually lasting from one to four years. There are over 200 types of Apprenticeships suitable for hundreds of job roles including accountancy and Engineering.

The Apprenticeship framework comprises of on and off the job training incorporating a competence based element, a knowledge based element, transferable ‘functional skills’, employment rights and responsibilities. The frameworks are designed and developed by Sector Skills Councils to ensure the training is industry relevant. From April 2011 Frameworks need to be SASE (Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for England) compliant. The National Apprenticeship Service helps to fund the training. 6 | Presentation title – 00/00/2012 Who are NAS? National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) a Government Department part of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS). NAS – Established to provide an End to End service to Employers. – Works hand in hand with the Skills Funding Agency to effectively manage training provider provision maintaining quality.

Apprenticeships Vacancies Online – FREE to Advertise Bureaucracy – Reduced Employer Service – supporting Employers Awareness/perception – Clarity Suitably qualified young people NAS are independent – don’t deliver directly, are able to identify and refer most suitable providers to meet your needs.

8 | Presentation title – 00/00/2012 What does it cost? If your apprentice is aged between 16 and 18, Government funding will cover the cost of their training. If they are aged over 19 the employer may be required to make a contribution towards the training cost. They can be a new recruit or an existing member of staff. The employer pays the apprentice a salary reflective of industry rates and experience. The minimum wage is £2.60 per hour but the average is £170 a week. With many Local, Regional and National Providers able to deliver most frameworks. The National Apprenticeship Service would be happy to discuss individual requirements with Employers to ensure that they are able to use the most suitable providers for their Business. Based on location, specialisation or preferred delivery model.

11 | Presentation title – 00/00/2012 Employer Grant Introduction of a Grant in April 2012 to help employers recruit Apprentices. It will enable thousands of small firms that don’t currently hire apprentices to take on a young person aged 16 to 24 The Grant will be available to employers with up to 250 employees. It will be available to small firms in all industries and for Apprenticeships at all levels. The incentive payment will offer up to £1,500 and will be made in 2 stages. This will support up to 40,000 new apprenticeships in 2012/13. Further details of how and when employers will be able to express formal interest in it are currently being developed and will be announced as soon as possible.
