3
Parts of a Computer Monitor CPU Keyboard Mouse Printer Disk Drive
4
CPU Other names –Central Processing Unit –Microprocessor –The “brain” of the computer Functions –Allows millions of calculations per second –Makes possible to write letters –Makes possible to balance checkbook Processing Device
5
Monitor Shows a “soft copy” of output –Soft copy means non-paper Used to show computer images Output device
6
Printer Used to make a “hard copy” of output –Hard copy means paper copy Types of Printers –Impact-strikes the paper Dot Matrix-prints many dots close together to form a character or image –Non Impact Inkjet-shoots ink through nozzles to produce images and characters Laser-uses heat to produce images and characters Output Device
7
Keyboard Used to enter letters into the computer Also contains numbers and symbols Input Device
8
Mouse Used to move the cursor and pointer around screen –Cursor-flashing line that indicates where data entered will appear Used to select items on the screen Input Device
9
Disk Drive Used to store information on a disk. Examples: –Floppy Drive –Hard drive –Zip Drive –Flash Drive Storage Device
