REVIEW QUESTIONS (and then some material!) Weathering, Erosion, Deposition
2
1. Two students noticed cracks on the school’s outside basketball court. Which process can the students conclude caused the cracks? A.Erosion B.Weathering C.Deposition D.Wind
3
2. The sand dune in the picture above was formed as a result of – A. wind erosion. B. animal movement. C. mass movement. D. mechanical weathering.
4
3. Which of the following landforms is a result of deposition? A.A. B.B. C.C.D.D.
5
4. The sides of the Grand Canyon show many different layers of rock. Which statement describes how the Grand Canyon was formed? A.The canyon has a waterfall. B.Big rainstorms washed rocks out of the canyon. C.A flowing river cut into rocks to form the canyon. D.The canyon was formed from the uplifting of rock.
6
5. Which is an example of a feature on the Earth’s surface caused by the force of wind? A.Limestone rocks B.Sandbars C.Limestone caves D.Sand dunes
7
6. Which process is NOT caused by the movement of Earth's plates? A. Ocean island formation B. Weathering C. Mountain building D. Volcanic eruption
8
7. People living on the Texas Gulf Coast have to place stone barriers along the shoreline to prevent wearing away of coastal land by wave action. This process is called: A. Erosion B. Weathering C. Plate tectonics D. Deposition
9
8. Names and dates on cemetery tombstones are often worn away by the constant exposure to wind, rain and frost. This process is known as: A. Erosion B. Frost action C. Volcanic action D. Weathering
10
9. Rivers running quickly through the same area for millions of years would likely form: A. Mountains B. Volcanoes C. Valleys D. Glaciers
11
10. What is weathering? Breakdown of rock into smaller pieces from the effects of wind, water, or ice. Glaciers create valleys as the push through mountains
12
11. WHAT IS EROSION? Movement of weathered material on Earth’s surface by wind, water, or ice.
13
12. What is deposition? The build-up of land by settlement of sediment and soil in a new location.
14
13.What are two landforms created by glaciers? Moraine- Moraines are accumulations of dirt and rocks that have fallen onto the glacier surface or have been pushed along by the glacier as it moves. The dirt and rocks composing moraines can range in size from powdery silt to large rocks and boulders. Glaciers create valleys as the push through mountains.
15
15. What is precipitation? Water that falls from the air to the ground (rain, snow, sleet, and hail).
16
17. What is a delta? Triangle-shaped (deposit) landform at the mouth of a rive where the river empties into another body of water.
17
20. What is a glacier? Slow moving mass or ice formed by accumulation and compaction of snow on mountain.

DELTA Rivers move slowly at the river’s mouth. The river carries a lot of sediment and mud. The river deposits (drops) the sediment and mud at its mouth. This sediment and mud spreads out into a fan- like shape, or delta, across the mouth of the river.mouth
