The Texas Oil Boom Effects: increased the economy of Texas, Rapid production of Oil

How does the Unit Questions help us identify the American spirit? Connection to Unit Question: Without risk there is no reward. It is always important for people to take risks? Writing assignment: Read the Unit Question. Come up with a list of examples of people or groups of people that demonstrated risk- taking in United States history? After we have reflected on this we will share out some of our answers.

Project: What to do: Create a model Oil boom town You are going to create an oil boom town. The picture on the right is what oil boom towns looked like in the late 1800s and in the early 1900s. Look at the layout of the boom town that I have printed out for you. I have numbered the pictures of things I want you to research what they look like and the print or draw those pictures. For the grade you need to use at least ½ page picture and explanation from that time period.

Today’s objective: SWBAT: to write 3 paragraphs that explain the economic, Social and Political effects of the Oil industry on Texas. In order to ensure that you are going to achieve the objective you will need to create outline on your paper that resembles the following: I Introduction II. Economic effects III, Social Effects IV. Political Effects IV. Conclusion

THE OIL BOOM- Oil was found throughout Texas in the 1860s through the 1880s. The Texas oil industry began to grow after drillers discovered oil in Corsicana in 1894 and the discovery oil at Spindle top in 1902.

Oil boom lab activity- What is a boom town? The oil industry increased the population and development of many Texas cities as boomtowns developed in areas around oil towns. Assignment: After we have created our oil boom town on our papers your job is going to be to produce evidence that the oil industry did do these things. If it is a graph you need to create the graph and then write a paragraph explanation of the graph. If it is direct quotes from the book then write the page number and then copy the quote. EX: pg. 96- “The oil industry began in TEXAS.” You must include at least 10 direct quotes.

Derricks are towers that support oil- drilling equipment; A refinery is a factory where crude oil from the ground is refined and made into products.

Wildcatters, land speculators, surveyors Wildcatters were typically young men who were willing to look for oil in a dangerous industry. Land speculators determined how much land was worth. Surveyors were educated on how the land could be used and could determine if it was good for oil.

Major oil companies developed. Many Oil companies that survived the initial boom grew into major companies such as Gulf oil company and Standard oil company.

The government regulates the oil industry- why? The Texas government began to regulate parts of the oil industry and also collected taxes on oil production, which earned it a lot of money.

Philanthropist- People who donate money to various causes or institutions. Many oil producers were philanthropists and gave to universities, hospitals, and other charitable organizations. John D. Rockefeller of the Standard Oil company.
