3 What does this picture explain about this time period? Oil found throughout Texas during the 1860s and 1800s Texas Oil industry began after discovery in Corsicana in 1894.

4 Equipment of Oil Drilling Derricks are the towers that support drilling equipment.

5 Where is crude oil turned into gasoline? A refinery is a factory where crud oil from the ground is refined and made into products.

6 Spindletop 1902 The discovery at Spindletop 1902 marked the beginning of the Texas Oil boom. It inspired others to drill around the area in search of Oil. (“wildcatters”). The Oil industry increased the population and development of many Texas Cities.

7 Monopoly wasn’t just a game… Oil companies that survived the initial boom grew into major companies such as the Gulf Oil corporation and the Standard Oil Company.

8 Wildcatters Independent owners of oil companies that searched new land for drilling.

9 Boom towns Towns that grew along with economic booms People were drawn to them by the opportunity to make money in new businesses. Oil boom attracted young people who would otherwise have been farmers, to work in the oil fields.

10 The role of government The Texas government began to pass laws regulating parts of the oil industry and also collected taxes on oil industry, which earned a lot of money.

11 Homework: Many oil producers were philanthropists and gave to universities, hospitals, and other charitable organizations. Find at least 10 of these items that the following people created
