Prince William County HPE Vision & Mission Statement The primary purpose of health and physical education instruction is to introduce PWC students to a variety of individual, team, and lifetime fitness activities, as well as the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain personal lifelong health and wellness. Activities may include team sports, personal fitness, recreational activities, individual activities, rhythmic activities, outdoor education. Comprehensive health instruction will provide opportunities for a variety of physical, mental, emotional, and social development.

Locks/Lockers Locker Locks – Locks will be provided by Brentsville District High School. If a lock is lost, “stolen”, missing, or damaged at any point of the school year, the student(s) are responsible to pay $5.00 for the lock. Students are strongly encouraged to leave ALL valuables either at home or in their hall lockers.

Back Packs We recommend leaving book bags in their main locker and not bring bags and valuables into the locker room. If you do, however, you must lock them up inside a locker. Leave all clothing, bags, purses, wallets, etc locked safely in a locker. The PE department cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items.

Team Room Team bags may be put in the team room which will remain locked from 7:15-1:50. No person will be let in for any reason between those times. Please plan ahead.

Electronic Devices Cell phones and I-Pods are not allowed to be used in the locker rooms, PE classes, or in health class. Brentsville teachers and coaches are NOT responsible for lost, stolen or abused electronic items.

Physical Education Dress Requirement Students are required to change into workout attire which may consist of school appropriate shorts, sweatpants, athletic shoes, and t-shirt suitable for activity (no denim please) Athletic attire is available for purchase for $8.00 for shirt and $12.00 for shorts Rental uniforms may be borrowed from the department for ¢50 an item.

Physical Education Dress Requirement Appropriate athletic shoes and socks that provide for safety in specified activity Student athletes are not to wear school assigned athletic team uniforms and/or gear. Students who do not dress appropriately for class will be given an alternate written assignment.

Student Attendance Student Attendance is expected for every class. If it is necessary for a student to be absent, excused, or receive medical modifications for their instruction, please refer to Regulation 636-1 on the PWCS website: http//www.pwcs.edu/admin/pwcs/admin_pdfs/R 636-1.pdf. http//www.pwcs.edu/admin/pwcs/admin_pdfs/R 636-1.pdf Students should dress for participation in all situations possible. The teachers can modify instruction on an individual basis if the student is prepared for class.

Make-Up Work The student is responsible for communicating with the teacher about missed work do to absence The flex time will be used to create activity for the student to make up time missed in physical education as well as classroom as well as enrich the educational process

Participation Expectation: Students benefit from instruction in health, physical education, and driver education by meeting participation requirements. Participation will be in a variety of activities that allow students to explore and apply information learned for a lifetime of individual fitness and wellness.

Grading Students are assessed each nine weeks on the following criteria: daily activity, skilled and cognitive achievement, and implementation of learned knowledge. Examples of successful participation include; being prompt, dressed for activity, practicing respect for self and others, and demonstrating levels of engagement in class activities.

Personal Wellness Plan The Personal Wellness Plan (PWP) is an end of course requirement for HPE I and HPE II. This will consist of analysis of current physical activity/wellness as well as goal setting and planning for future activity.

Daily Grades in Physical Education: Each individual will be graded daily based upon their performance/participation in a combination of the state and NASPE standards of physical education: fitness/conditioning, skilled movement, movement concepts, and sportsmanship/responsible behaviors (which include dressing appropriately) Points will be deducted for failure to complete an above standard(s).

Drivers Education Classroom Driver Education is provided for free to all students in the tenth grade health and physical education (HPE II). 36 hours. – Sept 3-Oct 11 and Nov 18-Dec 20 Behind-the-Wheel is offered during school in HPE II, Adv PE, Weight Training, or some electives. The cost is $230.00. Sign-up sheets are available from HPE II and advanced PE teachers. Students may not be taken out of classroom drivers education, but they can be taken from PE and health instruction and some electives.

Classroom Drivers’ Education A student must meet the following Virginia Driving code requirements to successfully complete the classroom phase of Driver Education instruction: Attend and successfully complete (with a passing grade) a minimum of 36 hours of classroom instruction; During the school year in which the student participates in classroom instruction, the student and parent are required to attend a 90 minute presentation*. The legislative requirement is for participation in a minimum 90 minute program; therefore, no one will be admitted after the presentation has started and the doors have been closed (Promptly at 7:00pm). Behind the Wheel During school Costs $230.00. Checks to BDHS Student must have valid permit Applications are available from PE teacher Students will miss PE or other health classwork Students will be taken out in groups of 4 Students with the earliest eligibility date will be taken first Payment of $230.00 is due on the first day of Range and road. We will drive through early June Students with late eligibility dates may also be interested in summer school road and range here at Brentsville. Applications will be available in May.

Licensing Obtaining a Learners Permit: An applicant must be at least 15 years and 6 months old and under the age of 18. The learner’s permit is obtained at a Department of Motor Vehicles customer service center after fulfilling several requirements; Details about the application and licensing process, please go to DMVnow.com.DMVnow.com Receiving a 180 Day Provisional License: A student must meet the following criteria to receive their 180 day PDL-180 Provisional License: Be at least 16 years and 3 months old; Have held a learner’s permit for nine months; Successfully complete a state-approved driver education classroom course and a behind the wheel road and range program with minimum in-car mileage requirement; Parent has signed the PPF-03 permission form certifying child is properly insured and has driven a motor vehicle for 45 hours, at least 15 of which were after sunset; Parent has submitted the 45-hour driving log; Both a parent and the student must attend a mandatory 90 minute program in order for the student to complete their classroom instruction.
