2 Some Findings According to a study conducted in Europe on the impact of new media on school students: Very few students (22%) visited the library and they spend very less time in the library. They read for passing the examination. Significant number (57.5%) of students never visited the library At home, young students (70%) spend a minimum of 2 hours to watch TV/ playing Games on mobiles and they spend less than 1 hour for home work The library memberships have grown but the readership has come down Do we see that libraries are gradually losing relevance for the community? If yes, how do we make it more relevant for the community?

3 Public Library as Community Services Centre Understand the community better - CNA of various segments Identify the gap areas Forge partnerships to fill the gaps Role of libraries could go beyond issuance of books Think out of the box in designing the space and serve the community Some of the key services that can be delivered through Libraries are: Education Health Agriculture Financial Inclusion Government 2 Citizen (G2C) Services Business 2 Citizen (B2C) Services

5 Digital Literacy According 71st NSSO report, only 6% households in rural areas and 29% of urban households in India own a computer and less than 14% persons can operate a computer. There is a widening gap in digital divide. Under the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM), Libraries can become a Training Centre and train one person in every eligible family on basic digital literacy. For each candidate, the Government reimburses upto INR 500 per candidate Supporting Agency: National Digital Literacy Mission Education and Awareness Programmes Financial Literacy Libraries can act as Financial Literacy hubs for creating awareness on the basics of financial planning, how to budget?, savings options, etc. Supporting Agency: NABARD and Investor Education and Protection Fund

6 Legal Literacy Libraries can become legal awareness cells for the masses and create awareness on various basic legal aspects like fundamental rights, violence against women and children, etc. Supporting Agency: District Legal Services Authority, State Legal Services Authority, and Ministry of Justice, Government of India Education and Awareness Programmes Facilitation Services National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) State Universities/ State Boards Career Guidance, etc.

10 Soil Testing Libraries can partner with the local KVK or provide soil test solutions at their library itself by procuring a low-cost soil testing kit Supporting Agency: KVKs/ State Agriculture University/ Some Private Players Agriculture Crop Related Information and Advisories Libraries can partner with various organisations to create crop related knowledge repositories. Supporting Agency: MSSRF, Digital Green, Reliance Foundation, etc

11 Market Information Libraries can provide the critical market information of various farmer produces from various mandis Supporting Agency: AGRISNET, ITC eChoupals Agriculture Weather Forecast Libraries can provide the weather forecast of any specific location. Supporting Agency: IMD and INCOIS

13 13 Banking Services Financial Inclusion – Banking ► Enrollment of customers, including collection of biometric & other details, provide card (ID Card, Debit Card, Credit Card, PIN) ► Transaction facility like Deposit & Withdrawal of money in an account with a bank, Balance Enquiry & issue Receipts/ Statement of Accounts. ► Remittances from an account with a bank to an account with the same ► Disbursal of credit facilities to borrowers involving small amounts strictly as per the instructions of the Bank Products offering ► No Frills Savings Bank account ► Recurring Deposit Accounts ► Remittances ► Fixed Deposit / Overdraft / Retail loans ► KCC/GCC
