The intent of the State Board of Education (SBOE) is that the process standards should not be addressed nor assessed in isolation. The instructional materials and assessment items for mathematics must integrate the process standards into the rest of the student expectations for each grade level and high school course.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Process Standards Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2014. All rights reserved. The Commissioner assembled a group of mathematics experts to develop a draft of the standards. This draft was used as a starting point for the committee as they developed the TEKS.

During the first and second meetings, the committee reviewed the Commissioner’s draft and made recommendations. These meetings occurred in the spring and summer of 2011. The committee recommendations were posted for informal feedback. Feedback from SBOE-appointed math experts was provided as part of the TEKS Update at the September 2011 SBOE meeting. In October of 2011, the committee met to develop final recommendations based on directions from the SBOE and informal feedback.

A public hearing was held during the January 2012 SBOE meeting. The recommendations were approved for first reading and filing authorization. Official public comment period opened following the January 2012 SBOE meeting. A second public hearing was held before the April 2012 SBOE meeting. The proposed revisions to the TEKS were presented for second reading and final adoption.

Newly Adopted Math TEKS Personal Financial Literacy Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2014. All rights reserved. A bill was passed by the 82 nd Texas Legislature in 2011 requiring the SBOE to incorporate personal financial literacy standards in math for grades K - 8. At the January 2012 SBOE meeting, the personal financial literacy strand was added to the TEKS for grades K - 8.

Implementation Timeline Kindergarten - Grade 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2014. All rights reserved. The new math TEKS for grades K - 8 will be implemented in the 2014 - 2015 school year. The new math TEKS for the high school courses are scheduled to be implemented in the 2015 – 2016 school year.
