2 A leading Polish University The University of Warsaw (UW), founded in 1816, is one of the best universities in Poland. High level of scientific research, its connection with the education of students and the diversity and attractiveness of University’s teaching determines its position in the country and worldwide. For several years, the UW has been ranked first or second in the national rankings of Higher Education Institutions. It remains the most respected institution in the country among employers and faculty and unrivaled among public HEIs in terms of the number of international students. Currently, the University of Warsaw educates about 45,000 undergraduate and graduate students, as well as over 3,200 PhD students. It employs 3,500 scholars. One in four holds the title of professor. In 2016 the University of Warsaw will be celebrating its 200 th anniversary. For the last two centuries the University has been exerting significant influence on the history of Warsaw and the whole country. It has fostered the advancement of sciences, educated the country’s elites and been an important centre of social and cultural life. Today, ahead of its 200 th anniversary, the University sets itself new strategic goals for the future. The most important one is attaining the status of a leading European university. UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW National and international companies highly value the UW graduates, among which you can find many prominent persons, successful entrepreneurs and recognised scholars and writers, laureates of numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize.

3 The number of international students at UW is growing from year to year. Currently over 1,600 students from abroad are studying at the University that makes up 3,6% of the student body in degree programmes (with short-term studies, the percentage of them reaches nearly 6%). There are over 240 international PhD students. International university The University is listed among top 2% of the world’s best research universities and recognised by prestigious international rankings: the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AKA Shanghai Ranking), the Times Higher Education World University Ranking or the Quacquarelli Symmonds World University Ranking. The UW Master's degree and MBA programmes are among top Eduniversal Best Masters and MBA Worldwide ranking. The University pursues a broad and varied international co-operation which can be measured by its bilateral agreements with 357 partner institutions of higher education from 70 countries of the world and around 420 partner institutions within the European Union’s Erasmus Programme. The University of Warsaw holds a number of international certificates, including the European Commission (University Erasmus Charter). The UW cooperates with over 1,100 institutions abroad and is a member of approx. 100 scientific international associations and networks, i.a. 4 Research university The University of Warsaw is a leading scientific centre in Poland. There are several units working dynamically on the University advancement, supporting research and innovation. Recently, the University accomplished several significant investments, such as the Centre of New Technologies and the Biological and Chemical Research Centre. In cooperation with other leading Warsaw's education and research institutions the UW has created the Centre of Preclinical Research and Technology. Each year the body of publications produced by the University scholars increases by approx. 7,000 new items. The research results of the UW scientists are presented in foreign magazines, including periodicals distinguished by the Journal Citation Reports, and European Reference Index for the Humanities. The results of studies, which the researchers from the UW participate in, are published, among others, in the most prestigious magazines like ‘Science’ and ‘Nature’. In many areas the University of Warsaw scholars maintain an already well-established position in the world of science, e.g. the University archaeologists, astronomers, physicists, chemists. UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW The scholars participate in over 150 projects financed by European and other international funds and organisations, such as the EU framework programmes, European Science Foundation, European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research, European Economic Area and Norway Grants, European Molecular Biology Organisations. The University is the leader among all Polish institutions which won the 7th Framework Programme grants. In February 2014, the UW Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling achieved the 5th position among research centers in Europe and 14th all over the world in Webometrics ranking, evaluating the visibility of research institutions in the network.

6 DEGREE (BACHELOR AND MASTER-LEVEL) PROGRAMMES OF STUDY Polish students, as well as international students studying in Poland on the same conditions as Polish citizens, have the right to free of charge studies (only full-time studies) or pay tuition fees applicable to Polish students, depending on the study programme (part-time studies, studies in foreign languages). International students admitted on fee-paying basis must pay tuition fees, not lower than the equivalent of 2,000 EUR per year – for 1 st cycle studies (Bachelor-level), long cycle and 2 nd cycle (Master-level) studies. In the first year international students admitted on fee-paying basis are also obliged to pay additional 200 EUR one-off fee. 8 PhD (doctoral) studies The University of Warsaw provides over 30 PhD programmes, including interdisciplinary and international ones. They are aimed at people who are interested in scientific activity and conducting researches. However, the PhD programmes are also aimed at people who strive to reach a higher level of their professional career. Additionally, in some situations particular UW faculties provide individual PhD programmes offered in English that are aimed at international students. A potential candidate should contact a faculty s/he is interested in, in order to gain more information. 10 STUDY OFFER IN ENGLISH Non-degree (short-term) studies The University of Warsaw provides international students at Bachelor, Master or Doctoral levels with the opportunity of short-term studies (up to one academic year). Each year over 1,000 international students follow courses agreed on with their home university or of their choice, gain international study and intercultural experience, as well as benefit being part of the European Higher Education Area. There are no entry exams as enrolment is based on the submitted application documents. Each application is individually assessed based on the entrance requirements. A Learning Agreement, a document that includes details of the proposed study programme at UW is signed by the student and the representatives of both the home university and the University of Warsaw. An official Transcript of Records as well as a Certificate of Stay is issued at the end of study period at the University of Warsaw. Based on these documents the study period can be recognized by the student’s home university.

11 Learning Polish Language The Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners ‘Polonicum’ offers a wide selection of Polish language courses at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels throughout the academic year, as well as several courses on Polish culture, history and traditions. The 'Polonicum' organises one-year Preparatory Course of Polish Language for Foreigners, open courses with three-month terms and intensive summer language courses that feature elements of Polish culture and history. 'Polonicum' holds regular classes for international students at the UW or other academic institutions located in the capital as a supplement to their study or research (it is merely a language skills programme, not a regular academic faculty).
