Organisms and Their Environment
2
Why are we studying the environment? -Understanding what affects the environment is important because it’s where we live!
3
You can study it in college!
4
You can do it as a job!
5
You can do it as a hobby!
6
Warm Up Thursday Objective: YWBAT name and describe the six levels of organization in ecology. Name one reason why we study ecology.
7
I. Ecology -Ecology is the study of interactions that take place between organisms and their environment.
8
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology Biosphere (biggest group) Biome Ecosystem Community Population Organism- (smallest group)
9
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 1. Biosphere-part of the Earth that supports life.
10
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 2.Biomes-large group of ecosystems that share certain characteristics. Ex: Desert, Forest
11
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 3. Ecosystems-made up of interacting communities. Ex: Horse eating grass, grass growing in ground.
12
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology -Ecosystems are made up of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors.
13
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology Biotic factors-living things Ex: trees, animals, bacteria Abiotic factors-non-living things Ex: sun, soil, air, water Examples of ecosystems made up of biotic and abiotic factors:
14
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 4. Communities-made up of interacting populations. Ex: Deer, zebra and grass living together.
15
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 5. Population-a group of organisms of one species that live in the same place at the same time. Ex: Many deer
16
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology 6. Organism-a living thing. Ex: One deer.
17
Warm Up Friday Objective: YWBAT illustrate the six levels of organization in ecology and differentiate between biotic and abiotic factors. What level of organization (BBECPO) is a flock of birds? In the goals box, fill in one step you took this week to begin to reach your New Year’s Resolution (Goal)
18
Biotic vs. abiotic Biotic = living Abiotic = nonliving A – Abiotic B - Biotic
19
Biotic or Abiotic?
31
III. Organisms in Ecosystems -A habitat is an organism’s place of survival.
32
III. Organisms in Ecosystems -A niche is the role an organism plays in its environment (how it gets food, finds shelter, and reproduces). -A niche includes all of an organism’s interactions with the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) parts of its environment. Example: A cockroach’s niche is inside a house, eating garbage.
