Background Patrick Henry (1736–1799) is remembered for his ringing declaration “Give me liberty or give me death!” Yet, he contributed much more than rhetoric to eighteenth-century politics and to the formation of a new United States. This video excerpt describes the ways in which his efforts helped change the course of American history and the circumstances that led to Henry becoming the “voice of liberty. ” Henry was born in a frontier region of Virginia, and was raised in a cultured but modest environment. He made several unsuccessful attempts at storekeeping and farming before discovering his true calling: the law and politics.

Questions to answer… O 1. Analyze Why was Patrick Henry such an effective speaker? Why do we have so little information on the exact content of Henry’s speeches? O 2. Evaluate Explain the historical significance of Henry’s Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions. How did his objections shape or transform the political discussion around the controversy? O 3. Evaluate Based on this video, in what ways might Henry’s Speech to the Second Virginia Convention be considered a foundational U.S. document? What was the historical and literary significance of the speech?

Project: Foundational Document Speech O What is a foundational document from the last 100 years (1914-2014) that impacts society? O Work by yourself or with a partner to create speech that responds to this question. O Choose a book, album, movie, Web site, or even a law that could be considered the equivalent of a foundational document in this time frame. O Explain the impact of this work on society, citing specific details. O Incorporate your defense of your choice into a speech If possible, use effective elements we recognized in the many speeches we watched. O Use the rubric to help guide your grade and make sure you and your partner are sharing the work equally! O You will have today, tomorrow, and Monday in class to work on this, and you will be presenting next week Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Tomorrow there will be spaces to sign up. O This is considered a LONG TERM PROJECT, so it is due on your selected date. No exceptions. Be here. Be ready. Be responsible. O You will need 2 final copies of the speech. One for you to use when delivering it, and one for me as I grade.

What is a Foundational Document?? O The root of this phrase is the term “foundation” which is essentially something we can safely and securely build upon. O A Foundational Document is a document (letter, speech, movie, etc. are included in this) that allows us to move forward to the next level from our current state. O For instance, The Gettysburg Address worked in tandem with the Emancipation Proclamation as Foundational Documents that led our country forward out of slavery. They helped us reach the next level. O What are some other examples?

Example (No you may NOT use) (movie) “The Breakfast Club” – This movie is incredibly well- known and highly revered as being a relatively accurate depiction of the nature of cliques and stereotypes in high school. This film drew attention to the classism and social inequities that existed in present day high schools, solidifying and validating this structure. For this speech: I will NOT simply summarize the movie I will introduce it and give my brief overview of the theme or central idea of the film. I will justify its value as a foundational document (multiple reasons why it would qualify in my opinion) I will use argumentative structures that are relevant and effective for this task (i.e. anecdotes, cause and effect, sequencing, connection to societal structure, etc.)

Continue Working on Your Project O Topic chosen and presentation time scheduled O Make sure you have a written Speech (5 paragraphs or more, remember your speech has to be 3 minutes to 3:44). O You have CLEARLY identified how your chosen foundational document has impacted society with relevant references to your foundational document. O You and your partner have decided who is going to present what. O You have practiced your speech before presenting. O Remember you will be presenting Wednesday and Thursday.
