1. Starter To complement our notes and learning from last lesson (Topic 10 Introducing Large ICT Systems: Features of Large ICT Systems), fold your piece of paper provided into 8 squares. On one side of the paper, you have 2 minutes to list down as many features of a large ICT system as possible. After the two minutes is up, circulate around the room visiting one peer at a time, ask them to tell you something about any of the features you have identified OR for them to give you another feature of a large ICT system. Objectives At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: - 1.Identify and select appropriate Changeover/Conversion methods for large ICT Systems with clear justification on their appropriateness. 2.Identify the need for maintenance and select appropriate maintenance methods to maintain large ICT systems.

Exam Practice A large, international newspaper organisation with many offices worldwide is about to move to a new version of the stock control monitoring software used on the company PCs, laptops and other mobile devices. The management of the company is considering the following two methods of changeover: – Direct changeover – Phased changeover Compare the two changeover methods being considered. 5. Assessment Objectives (Outcome) Grade E/D Standard: Be able to l briefly explain the need for changeover and maintenance on large ICT systems. Achieve more than 40% of the exam style question. Grade C/B Standard: Be able to select appropriate changeover/conversion methods for large ICT systems by justifying their appropriateness.. Achieve 60% or more of the exam style question. Grade A Standard: Be able to select appropriate maintenance methods for large ICT systems by justifying their appropriateness. Achieve 80% or more in the exam style questions.

6. Introduction Due to the complexity and scale of some large ICT systems, can present problems during the installation stage. Skilled people use a number of methods to introduce such large systems. Do you know what these methods might be? (Hint: Think back to Topic 8 the handover processes)

7. Methods of Introducing Systems? What are they? Can you identify, which method belongs to which? The original system is instantly replaced with the new system. The new system is tested out by a small number of using, or a business’ branch. If this test goes well the program will be rolled out to the rest of the company. The new system is implemented in stages. For example, part of the new system could be implemented and used, before another section is added at a later date. Both systems run together at the same time. This allows the new system to be stress tested, whilst having the old system to fall back on in case anything goes wrong. Eventually the old system is stopped. In pairs, quickly work out which description matches which changeover method. You have 5 minutes…

8. Installing Large ICT Systems There are 4 Installation / Changeover / Conversion methods. There are some that are suited to implement large ICT Systems. Activity 1 – Look back at the various changeover methods we learned from Topic 8: Development Methods. Activity 2: List a couple of benefits and risks of each changeover method covered last week. Choose which changeover method would be suited to Implementing Large ICT Systems and justify your reasons as to why? (10 Minutes)

9. Installation: Documentation Two types of documentation are produced after the system has been installed: System documentation – for the technicians who will maintain the system Diagrams, e.g. DFD Programming code Test records User documentation – for end users using the system Manuals, e.g. troubleshoot problems, backup data Tutorials, e.g. how to perform certain functions, print, save Installation instructions, e.g. minimal HW/SW requirements, how to set up the software etc.

10. Maintaining Large ICT Systems Large ICT Systems will need to be maintained. Many will need Adaptive, Corrective and Perfective Maintenance. When maintenance changes take place a new software patch is produced and released. Activity 3 – In pairs discuss and write down which maintenance method(s) is most likely to be carried out with large ICT systems. Justify your reasoning and ensure to provide examples to demonstrate understanding. (5 minutes) What is the difference between Corrective, Adaptive and Perfective maintenance? (Add to notes)
