11 Are their unemployment figures really that great?  Jews and women were forced out of their jobs  By 1934 all Jews were sacked from civil service jobs  Unemployed Jews and women were not registered  People who refused jobs offered by the labour service were arrested and put into concentration camps  Trade Unions were abolished & replaced by the ‘German Labour Front’ under Dr Ley  Strikes illegal  Conscription introduced in 1935 and an air-force established

14 Autarky – National Self Sufficiency  Hitler wanted Germany to be a strong independent country that was sufficient in food and materials.  Germany had lost WW1 because it had run out of food and war materials.  German scientist developed all sorts of artificial substitutes such as petrol from coal and coffee from acorns.  These new substitutes were made in Germany and gave the unemployed jobs in new industries.  Hitler also encouraged the growth of the car industry.

18 Plenary - Class discussion One lady who had lived through Nazi Germany stated that under the Nazis life was so good that it seemed the sun never stopped shining. In fact they called a sunny day “Hitler weather”. Life was good. Does the evidence support her memories. Was life better for the German people? If it was not; why might she have thought it was?

19 Extension Task: Did ordinary people benefit from the Nazi economic policies? Create Two columns: Yes / No to answer this question. Use pages 14-17 of the Orange Nazi Germany textbook to assist with this task.
