From “Through the Tunnel” The most grown-up thing Jerry does is when “He rushed to the bathroom, thinking she must not see his face with bloodstains” (13). I this this is a grown-up thing to do because he doesn’t need his mother’s comfort or worry. He can handle it himself. The most childish thing Jerry does is when, “He rushed to the bathroom, thinking she must not see his face with bloodstains” (13). I think this is childish because he can only express his emotions through crying.

When Quoting Dialogue It can get confusing…keep in mind that you MUST have an even number of total quotation marks. If the dialogue is the ONLY portion you are quoting, complete it as you would any other citation. It is an example of his mother’s worry when Jerry’s mom says, “I shouldn’t overdo things, darling, if I were you”(13).

When the dialogue is only PART of the entire quote… Use double “ at the start and end. Use single ‘ around the spoken words This is when you must count the total number of quotation marks. You might use 1,2, or 3 at a time. In the end, you should have an even number of ‘ marks. It is an example of Jerry’s desire to please his mom when the story says, “’ Oh, No!’ he said quickly, smiling at her out of that unfailing impulse of contrition- a sort of chivalry”(15).
