Common Material Uses – Plastics Polyamides Nylons (sintered) + Heat Stabilized, Flame Retardant, Dimensional Stability, Chemical resistance, High toughness, High Strength, High stiffness, Good wear resistance. - High moisture pick-up, Poor UV stabilization, High shrinkage, Moisture pick-up harms electrical components, Oxidization, High impact damage. Common uses include - Automotive Applications, Electrical/Electronic Applications, Engineering Parts, Industrial Applications, Housings, Gears, General Purpose, Sporting Goods, Consumer Applications. Due to this materials inability to protect electronics, it is unsuitable for use for my product. Although it is relatively cheap and strong, it is not water resistant. Users will not be able to use it outdoors (weather) or around day to day tasks (washing up, bathrooms)

Common Material Uses – Plastics Polycarbonate (PC) + - Flame Retardant, Good UV Resistance, High Impact Resistance, General Purpose, Good Processability, Good Dimensional Stability, High Heat Resistance. Subject to stress cracking, Fairly high processing temperatures required, Degrades upon extended residence time, Chemical resistance, Aromatic sensitivity Uses include – Bullet Proof Glass, Bottles, Food containers, Eye protection, Automotive headlamps, Swimming goggles, LCD Screens, Computer cases, Riot shields, Blenders, Hobby items. Although tough, and resistant to damage, Polycarbonate is not flexible enough for my design. Subject to stress cracking, it would not take long for wear to be seen when the user is attempting to secure on their wrist.

Common Material Uses – Plastics Polypropylene (PP) + - Food Contact Acceptable, Good Processability, Good Impact Resistance, High Flow, Good Stiffness, High Impact Resistance, High Stiffness. Low weight. Degraded by UV, Flammable, but retarded grades available, Attacked by chlorinated solvents and aromatics, Difficult to bond, Several metals accelerate oxidative degrading, Low temperature impact strength is poor. Uses include - Packaging and labeling, Textiles, (ropes, thermal underwear and carpets) Stationery, Plastic parts and Reusable containers, Laboratory equipment, Loudspeakers, Automotive components, banknotes. Cheap, tough, and easily formed, Polypropylene would be perfect for my wristband. More design would need to take place to allow flexibility, but once shelled and formed it would provide great protection to the electrical components within the device.

Common Material Uses – Plastics Silicone Elastomers (SI) + - Good Thermal Stability, High Heat Resistance, Low Viscosity, Low Shrinkage, Good Chemical Resistance, Good Tear Strength, Good Flexibility. Increased costs, Lower mechanical property values when compared to carbon based materials. Uses include – Phone cases, Cooking tools, Sealant, Adhesives, Lubricants, Medical applications, Insulation, Moulds, Clothing, Ice cube trays.– Silicone would be a great choice for my band, the problem being the materials cost. To keep my target market in mind is the main priority and the cost of manufacture would be too high to market the item at the desired price.
