4. Worker Education & Training Program The NIEHS has conducted health and safety training programs since 1987. Focus - provide awards to organizations to develop model worker safety and health training programs for workers engaged in activities related to hazardous waste removal or containment or chemical emergency response 18 non-profit organizations at 80 universities, labor-based safety programs and other institutions.

Hazardous waste (HWWTP) – model occupational safety and health training for hazardous waste removal, containment, and chemical emergency response (ER); DOE nuclear weapons cleanup training – training in environmental restoration, waste treatment and ER activities in the DOE’s nuclear weapons complex; Minority worker (MWTP) and Brownfields worker (BMWTP) – these programs focus on delivering comprehensive training to disadvantaged and underserved minorities for employment in the environmental restoration and hazardous materials fields and in Brownfields redevelopment; Hazmat disaster training (HDTP) - This new program enhances current hazardous materials workers and chemical responders, to train skilled response personnel, to create materials and deliver training to weapons of mass destruction response workers and to augment prevention and preparedness efforts in a wide variety of high risk settings. Dillard University (Dillard)- Deep South Center for Environmental Justice The Dillard Consortium will train individuals in New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX through a collaboration with Texas Southern University (TSU) The program includes a tiered training plan of no more than 6 weeks of basic skills and no more than 4 weeks of technical training for 100 students in Houston, TX. Small minority owned businesses

15. Center to Protect Workers Rights (CPWR) CPWR Consortium will train 25 students in the New Orleans, LA and surrounding parishes. The streamline training includes 40 hr Hazwoper, OSHA 10, Katrina Orientation, and an abbreviated construction skills training program. Under their regular program, they will train 25 students. The Louisiana Building and Construction Trades Council and the Louisiana Regional Council of Carpenters will continue to serve as the lead for the training. Training plan interfaces with union apprenticeship programs and local workforce development organizations to provide supportive services.
