The mass movement for racial equality in the United States is known as the civil rights movement Started in the late 1950s Through nonviolent protest actions, it broke through the pattern of racial segregation Segregation is the practice in the South through which black Americans were not allowed to use the same schools, churches, restaurants, buses, and other facilities as white Americans.

Martin Luther King Jr.- civil rights leader who believed in non-violence and civil disobedience (peacefully disobeying unjust laws) W.E.B. Dubois- William Edward Burghardt DuBois was a writer, historian, leader and one of the founders of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). He was the first black to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University. DuBois became a teacher.

Bessie Coleman- Staged the first public flight by an African American woman in America on Labor Day, September 3, 1922. She became a popular flier at aerial shows, though she refused to perform before segregated audiences in the South. Speaking at schools and churches, she encouraged blacks' interest in aviation

Thurgood Marshall- a courageous civil rights lawyer during racial segregation. Between 1938 and 1961, he presented more than 30 civil rights cases before the Supreme Court. He won 29 of them. His most important case was Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

March on Washington-On August 28, 1963, more than 2,000 buses and thirty special trains had brought a quarter of a million people to Washington, D.C., to protest against discrimination. People of all races and from all over the country traveled to our nation’s capital so their voices could be heard. This is where Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous “I Have a Dream...” speech.

Montgomery Bus Boycott- African Americans refused to ride city buses in Montgomery, Alabama; caused the city to lose money. Supreme Court ruled that Montgomery could no longer segregate its buses.

Brown v. Board of Education- ended segregation in public schools. By law, black and white students had to attend separate public schools. In reality, segregated schools were unequal: white schools were far more privileged than black schools, which were largely poor and overcrowded. Marshall argued that if all students were indeed equal, then why was it necessary to separate them? The Supreme Court agreed, ruling that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."

First Integration- In 1960, when Ruby Nell Bridges was 6 years old, her parents responded to a call from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and volunteered her to participate in the integration of the New Orleans School system. She is known as the first African-American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South. She attended William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana
