Building Bright Futures Through Scholarships and Mentoring OBMG Organization of Black Maritime College Graduates, Inc.
2
The OBMG was formed in 1994 by a group of SUNY Maritime College graduates who wanted to improve the opportunities for African American and minorities in the engineering and maritime industries. This is accomplished through recruitment, community outreach, educational partnerships, scholarships, mentoring, professional development seminars and career advancement through networking.
3
“To assist and encourage by educating and increasing public awareness regarding minority involvement in the maritime industry through recruitment, mentoring, scholarships, and fundraising.”
4
The OBMG has awarded over 150 scholarships based on academic achievement as well as financial need. Leadership ability, social consciousness and work ethic also play an important role in the process of choosing the scholarship recipients. The OBMG Scholarship Awards are given each year at the Annual Black History Month Dinner hosted by the Cultural Club at SUNY Maritime College, Bronx, New York.
5
The OBMG is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax deductible. They go entirely toward the scholarships as the members absorb all administrative costs. “Each and every donation, no matter how large or small, has a direct and positive impact on the futures of deserving students.”
6
87% percent of OBMG scholarship recipients successfully graduate and have obtained jobs in the engineering and maritime industries. One of the methods used to accomplish this is our cyber-mentoring program which allows us to stay connected with the students and with the graduates worldwide.
