How does the family’s outlook change from the beginning of the story to the end? If you were traveling on the Mayflower and could take 5 items, what would you take and why? Choose a topic to write about. Use the graph on the following slide and cite the text to justify your answer. Use the secret recipe to respond to one of the questions.
6
Who was talking to Whom? Where When What did they say? “Quote” Explain Quote Here… Analysis This shows….. Because Clearly, should This Proves…. would Obviosly, could It seems... might This suggests… Evidently It appears… Clearly If…then… Obviously Fiction Nonfiction
7
Additional Extensions You may want to choose one of the extension activities on the following slides to focus on additional skills or to help students make connections.
8
Letter Home The Mayflower is about to leave the Pilgrims and return home. Imagine that a Pilgrim of your age is writing a letter to a friend back in England to send on the ship. Write the letter. Make inferences to decide how the writer might feel based on information you read in the story. Think about these points: The Pilgrims can’t return to their old home. They just survived a terrible winter. The Indians are helping them. They have new homes and crops growing.
9
My Own Voyage Now you know about the voyage of the Mayflower and what the Pilgrims faced once they landed. When the Mayflower returned to Europe would you have stayed in the settlement or gone back on the ship? Write a paragraph. Tell whether or not you would want to stay and why. Take notes and think about: The dangers The hardships Religious freedom A new home
10
A New Postage Stamp The United States Post Office creates stamps to honor special people and events. Create your own stamp to honor the people of the Mayflower. Choose a person, place, or event. It should stand for an important idea or something the Pilgrims did that should be remembered. Draw the stamp as big as a piece of paper. Write a paragraph describing your design and justifying why you choose it.
11
Just a Few Things When the Pilgrims crossed the sea, they traveled in a small ship. There was room for only the most important things. If you were making the voyage, what things would you bring? List no more than five items. Explain your choices based on information you gained from the text.
12
Help Wanted-Pilgrims Write a help-wanted ad. You are looking for people to go on a sea voyage to America. The ship is the Mayflower, and the year is 1620. You are looking for people willing to start a new settlement in an unknown land. What kind of people would you want? What skills would be needed? Review Across the wide Dark Sea. Look at the details and make inferences to answer your questions. Then write a help wanted ad. Describe who you want for your voyage.
13
A Long, Cold Winter The Pilgrims’ first winter was terrible. They all suffered, and many died What are winters like where the Pilgrims landed? Do research and take notes in a nonfiction resource. Write a paragraph describing the weather and comparing it to winters where you live. Think about… Snowfall Rain High and low temperatures Seasons
14
Here at Last! The Pilgrims spent more than nine weeks at sea. That’s over two months on the ship! Write a paragraph about the longest trip you have been on. Think about questions like these: Where were you going? How long did you travel? What did you do during your trip? Did you ever feel the trip would never end? How did you feel when you finally arrived?
15
Acrostic Poem Choose a long word from the story, such as Mayflower or Pilgrim. Now write a poem about the name or word. Write about what you feel or think when you hear the word, based on what you read. Follow these steps. Print the word in capital letters down the left side of your paper. Next to each letter write a sentence or phrase that begins with that letter. For example: Sailing through the dangerous water, Every wave pounds the ship. All eyes look at the endless sea.
