1 Thursday, October 4 th ! Objective: Identify, explain and give examples of each plot element. Warm-up: Have your writer’s journal & Setting/Characters/Conflict worksheet from Tuesday. You have until 8AM to copy down the story map from your worksheet (had to do with your favorite book or movie) to the next open page in your Writer’s Journal. Keep your worksheet in your binder. I will grade the story map that you put into your Writer’s Journal. Coming up: Vocabulary Quiz over Week #3 terms is TOMORROW!

2 Writer’s Journal You have three assignments in your Writer’s Journal: –CERC chart –Active Reading Strategies practice (The Circuit) –Story Map for Setting/Characters/Conflict All assignments are expected to be complete, but you have until Monday to make sure they are.

Each assignment will be based on a 5- 3-1 scale: –5= Assignment shows completeness and demonstrates a solid effort –3= Assignment mostly shows completeness and demonstrates satisfactory level of effort –1= Assignment is mostly incomplete and demonstrates minimal level of effort

7 Plot (definition) Plot is action of a story- what happens as the story develops.

8 Why learn about it? Learning about these stages helps us keep track of a story’s events. Answers the question: what happened? Gives an outline for a quality summary.

9 1. Exposition Introduces the setting and the characters Sets up or hints at the conflict

10 Initial Conflict A conflict that starts off the story. EXAMPLE- In the first Harry Potter movie, the initial conflict is Harry going to Hogwarts.

11 2. Rising Action Shows how the conflict becomes more difficult Builds suspense

12 3. Climax Is the most exciting part and a turning point Makes the outcome of the conflict clear

13 4. Falling Action Eases the tension Shows how the main character resolves the conflict

14 5. Resolution Reveals how everything turns out Sometimes called the denouement (da-noo-man)

17 Now it’s your turn! With your group or on your own, copy down the plot diagram from your notes. Think of a movie or story book everyone is familiar with and complete a plot diagram for that movie or book. You’ll write your answers in the appropriate spot on the plot diagram.
