TIME LINE 1600-1700 1629 Salem is settled 1641 English law makes witchcraft a capital crime

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1688 After an argument several of the Goodwin children start acting strange. Their servant Goody Glover is accused of witchcraft, and hung.

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1689 Minister Samuel Parris comes to Salem – becomes convinced the devil is in Salem

TIME LINE 1600-1700 In 1692 Several Salem girls start acting strange (like the Goodwin children) 19 people were executed for witchcraft (more died in prison)

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1693 Remaining accused witches are tried, some are executed some released 1697 Parris is replaced as Salem minister

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1702 General Court declares the 1692 trials unlawful 1706 One of the leading accusers Ann Putnam publicly apologizes

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1711 Colony passes a bill to restore the names of the accused. This includes 600 pounds, given to the families

TIME LINE 1600-1700 1957 State of Massachusetts formally apologizes 1992 on 300 th anniversary, memorial is dedicated in Salem

WITCHCRAFT OFFENCES Contacting the devil Having a deal with the devil Having healing powers Reading Fortunes Sending their spirit into people

FAMILAR “Familiars were thought to be gifts from Satan or were inherited from other witches. Familiars would carry messages, go on errands, and assist in black magic rituals. Sometimes the witches would take on the form of their familiar so that they could travel about freely.” (Familiars in Witchcraft)

WHAT THE WITCHES REALLY DID… Cheating/Having an affair Being spiritual (including voodoo) Spending too much time outside Offending someone Misbehaving in public Nothing- some did nothing wrong

WHY WITCHCRAFT? If the doctor could find nothing wrong with someone who was acting strange- they believed it was witchcraft… There might be something really wrong with the person, or they could be acting…

WHY WITCHCRAFT? If it was thought that witchcraft was responsible for your issue, you were under pressure to give names…

WHY WITCHCRAFT? When “witches” would appear on the stand the accusers would have fits.

FITS: THE “EVIDENCE” Fall on the floor Twitch and scream Get pinched by spirits Pretend to see visions Ghosts, animal spirits Familiars

WRITING THE CRUCIBLE Written in the 1950’s Right after WWII ended Communists, Nazis, Witch Hunters- all used paranoia to scare people

WRITING THE CRUCIBLE AND RED SCARE Attempt to seek out communists or anyone with ties to them Scared people into falsely confessing

BLACKLISTING This kept these people from getting jobs Everyone avoids you, no one will help you… afraid of being blacklisted too…
