VICTORIAN ENTERTAINMENT By: Madison Dagg

CITY LIFE VS. COUNTRY In the cities people would often attend parties, concerts, fairs, cruises, and shows In the country popular entertainment included barn raising, qualting bees, weddings, ceilidhs (parties with Irish, or Scottish music, dancing, and stories), barn dances, and other diversions.

READING More people could read at this times so reading became very popular, this included books, and magazines. Books were often published in serial format so people would need to buy next weeks issue to follow the story.

SPORTS “blood sports” such as bear-baiting, and dog-and-bull fighting would be considered very strange and brutal today but were quite popular back then. Swimming for fun also became very popular

GAMES With no TV's, radio, or other devices people would rely on games to pass the time, some popular games were: Kissing his thumb- the player, hanging by his right arm from a pipe or beam, must lift his body in goal of kissing his thumb. Pulling the leg- two players lay side by side on their backs with the head of one by the feet of the other; they hold each other by the forearms and raise the left leg 3 times the 4 th time they catch each others leg and each tries to overturn the other.
