Sources of Fires Open Flames and Heat What things can start a fire besides the stove? Grease Never walk away from heating grease on a stove! Electrical Wiring Overloaded outlets Unsafe Storage areas Example: Paper near the stove

In Our Kitchens… Always double check to make sure that the stoves are turned off before you leave class! Check to make sure gas is not leaking. Clicking sound or gas smell = NOT good. Never walk away from the stove.

Fire Control Fire Extinguishers Smoke Detectors Automatic Hood and Sprinkler Systems

If a fire starts in our kitchens…. Call me over for help…ASAP! Identify the heat source. Turn off the heat source. Use salt to put out small fires. Cover up a grease fire with a lid. (smother) Use a fire extinguisher for larger fires or grease fires.

Fire Emergency Plan In case of emergency in the lab, we will exit out of the lab and turn left. We will exit through the front doors of Pike High School. If I tell you to leave, LEAVE! It is for your safety!! LAB

How can you prevent accidents in the kitchen?

Grooming Code No open-toed shoes Wear pants if possible Hair – up into ponytail holder No dangling jewelry! No baggy clothing

Handling Knives Don’t EVER run with a knife! Point tip down and away from body while walking. Hand a knife to someone using the handle. Pay attention to what you are cutting at all times.

Preventing Burns Be cautious when around stove. Never touch a hot pan without an oven mitt! Keep hot pans out of the sink until they have cooled. Most of all….... pay attention!!

No Cell Phones of Head Phones For multiple reasons, using your cell phone or having head phones in can be a danger in the lab. You will receive a 10 point deduction EVERY TIME I see a cell phone or need to ask you to put away your head phones. NO warnings. If I have to ask you more than once, an S-1 will follow. Do not plug in your phones in. This is for your safety!

Avoiding Slips and Falls Look where you are going. Clean up spills right away.

Lifting and Moving Objects Lift with your knees, not your back!

Using Ladders Safely Chairs are not ladders! Always ask me to get something for you.

Treating Burns and Cuts A representative from the Red Cross will be here next week to teach us how to treat burns and cuts!
