Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University Mechanical Engineering Capstone Information Session March 1 st and 3 rd, 2016 This session is a change to gather more information about the capstone programs available to you and to ask questions. In terms of your education get as much out of these programs as you can. Make an intelligent choice reflecting your interest.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University Educational philosophy in the capstone programs: ALL courses allow you to explore some form of product or engineering design. They all teach the same engineering design fundamentals. They differ in emphasis; either on technology, application, or portion of the design process. Emphasis on design-prototype-test-review. Students will see how their ideas perform. Prototype and test can be done by physicality, simulation or both. Show how synthesis (creation) and engineering analysis (evaluation) work together in support of design.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University A few practical notes about the ME capstone programs: No longer a “maymester” to finish capstone. You will be finishing your capstone project the next full semester. If you start in Autumn you will finish in Spring. If for whatever reason you do not start capstone in the autumn, you will have to extend you stay here by a semester and take capstone spring/fall; moreover, they will be limited to the 4900/4901.01 (spring) and 4901.02 (autumn) offering. Students must have completed 3360, 3671, 3870, and 3503 before starting capstone. No exceptions.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University ME 4900 Intro Capstone Design Choose from three tracks: Mechanical Engineering College of Engineering /EEIC Product Design & Engineering ENGR 5901.01 ENGR 5902.01 ME 4684 ME 4685 Mechanical Engineering ME 4901 General Projects ME 4902 Student Design Competitions ME 4905 Assisted Devices Multidisciplinary Capstone

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University ME 4900 Intro. to Design Studies ME 4902 Student Design Competitions ME 4901 General Projects ME 4905 Assisted Devices 1 st Track: 1 st 7 weeks of Autumn Semester ALL: 2 st 7 weeks of autumn plus spring semester

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University Who is responsible for each session: Anthony Luscher Associate Professor luscher.3@osu.edu Blaine Lilly Associate Professor lilly.2@osu.edu Shawn Midlam-Mohler Assistant Professor midlam-mohler.1@osu.edu Bob Rhoads Capstone Program Coordinator College of Engineering/EEIC rhoads.2@osu.edu Sandra Metzler Assistant Professor-Clinical metzler.136@osu.edu ME 4900/4901 General Projects ME 4684/4685 Product Design ME 4902 Student Design Competitions ME 4905 Assisted Devices ENGR 5901/2.01 Multidisciplinary Capstone

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University 4900: ME Capstone Design Anthony Luscher Associate Professor luscher.3@osu.edu

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University 4900: ME Capstone Design 7 week introduction to design. Gateway for students taking 4900 sequence. Emphasize the commonality of a general approach to design problems. Complete a mini project so they have seen the entire design process before starting their main project sequence. Fundamentals of engineering, design process, technical and professional skills ABET-EAC “small letter” skills Monday Lecture and 2 recitations a week. Want to engage students so focus on design exercises in recitations.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University Examples of Student Work

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University 10 ME 4901: General Projects Semester and a half. Finish Spring 2017. Focus on engineering innovation and high-technology hihg- performance projects that can be practically implemented. Students need to form high functional teams that communicate well and are strongly committed to a project. Good blend of analysis and practical experimentation. Student teams need to apply the entire mechanical engineering discipline as well as learn practical fabrication skills. The department fabrication resources are available to you. Material budgets are approximately $1K.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University Sample of Some Current Projects Improved prosthetic for Jimmy Strandbeast Walking Machine Improved motion for BB8

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University OSU Robotic Fish Program Window Sill Cleaning Robot
