Completing a dissertation is a matter of perseverance. choose a do-able topic Organize your dissertation, its chapters, around questions: substantive, conceptual, and methodological Get your work on paper 2

The task seems overwhelming. -break the project into small, manageable units There are no clear deadlines. -Work on sub-sections, finish in a Predictable amount of time, preferably today. 3

4 Being overpowered by negative thoughts -Ignore or repress self- defeating thoughts Becoming isolated. -Find sounding boards. Becoming overly anxious about your mentors’ reactions -Be a pro. Give each chapter to a mentor for comments.

Distill the arguments into a single sentence Set small goals Remember the cliché: “You’re not writing a book. You’re writing five research papers.” Brainstorm, then organize your ideas Be selfish Find a sounding board 5

Myth 1: Skilled writers write effortlessly. Myth 2: Skilled writers write from carefully plotted outlines. Myth 3: Two stages in the writing process: - writing a draft -editing it to correct grammar and delete typos & extraneous words. 6

Language and Spelling Avoid use of jargon Sentences - Keep the sentences simple & short - Use adverbs to link sentences - Proofread the work Tenses - Be very careful when using tenses & be consistent 7

Reports of work done are usually in the past tense Discussion and Conclusion, usually in the present tense. Where universal truths such as natural laws are stated, present tense is generally used. 8

Capitalise -Proper nouns & common nouns (when they form part of a name). Use acronyms sparingly, - If first time, spell them out, with the acronym following in parentheses after the full form. 9

Pagination - run consecutively through the dissertation including figures, tables, etc Headings -should be short & to the point -always use simple language 10

Learn the “tricks of the trade” -explain the significance of the topic -engage others who have studied the topic -effectively integrate quotations into argument 11
