4 Fear Communism comes to power in mass following the Russian Revolution and for the first time this ideology exists in a major world power American’s fear of Communism taking over the US leads to similar action to the Salem Witch Trials US Gov’t takes the fear of the people and attempts to eliminate any threat to American traditional economic values

5 Eastern Immigrants Factors leading to the Red Scare Eastern immigrants growing in number Communism taking over in Russia Anarchist rallies throughout the US calling for the overthrow of the gov’t

6 A. Mitchell Palmer The US Attorney General through 1920s Worked with the Justice Department and the FBI to promote anti-communist activities and arrest people within America who were deemed “enemies” the US standards and traditions Famously called the “Palmer Raids”

7 Effects of the Palmer Raids Through January 1920 Estimated up to 10,000 American citizens arrested on suspicion of crimes against the US Many of the arrests were completed without warrants Many were arrested because they had foreign accents Many deported out of US

8 Sacco and Vanzetti April 1920 A store owner in Braintree, MA is shot and killed Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested in the murder (Italian Immigrants) S&V were known anarchists but the evidence against them in the murder was not solid They were convicted and executed Prior to execution there were riots to protest the guilty verdict 1960s forensic evidence linked Sacco’s gun to the murder
