Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 13rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 José Ocariz LPNHE – IN2P3 et Université Paris Diderot On behalf of the MVA chapter editors and contributors Multivariate Analysis : Optimisation, tagging, PID, BKG suppression 2 nd “short” report

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 23rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Outline Status after 2 nd workshop at KEK Reorganisation of the former “MVA/Analysis Optimisation” chapters Status of various subchapters General Introduction / Analysis Optimisation Tagging algorithms PID algorithms Continuum-suppresion algorithms Manpower, timing issues

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 33rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Outcome from 1 st and 2 nd workshops

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 43rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Outcome from 1 st and 2 nd workshops Global status : Several section editors met at ICHEP Productive discussion Synchronised actions for the fall Writing has started

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 53rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Analysis optimization Section Analysis optimization Subsection Introduction Notations Figures of merit Methods Subsubsection Rectangular cuts Linear discriminants Neural nets Binary decision trees Boosting Bagging Random Forest Subsection Available tools Main section editor Frank Porter Status draft ongoing 1 st version to be uploaded Main features : Pedagogical introduction Fix notations framework reference for the specific applications following ± 6-8 pages

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 63rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Analysis optimization

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 73rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Analysis optimization

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 83rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Flavor tagging Section Flavor tagging Subsection Introduction Definitions Physics souces of tagging information Multivariate methods used Things we tried, what worked, what didn’t ? Subsection Flavor tagging algorithms BaBar and Belle algorithms Categories Subsection Measuring flavor tagging performance History of tagging performance in Belle and BaBar Subsection Systematic effects Tag-side interference Main section editor(s) Juerg Beringer Belle ? Status To start by Nov. Main features : Example of MVA application Specific to B-factories To be broadly referenced To be decided : Juerg : moving this chapter to the physics part (i.e. “more than a tool”) OK with me ± 8 pages

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 93rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Particle Identification Section Particle Identification Subsection Introduction Definitions Detector and physics souces of PID Multivariate methods used Subsection PID algorithms BaBar and Belle algorithms Subsection Measuring PID performance History of PID performance in Belle and BaBar Subsection Systematic effects Main features : Example of MVA application Large references to detector part Does not fit into detector part To be broadly referenced ± 6-8 pages ? Outline could look like : Main section editor(s) Ale Gaz (BaBar) Belle ? Status About to start

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 103rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Particle Identification

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 113rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Background suppression Section Background suppression Subsection Introduction Sources of backgrounds: continuum, B-related Subsection Kinematical discrimination m ES /M bc,  E, intermediate resonant masses, angular distributions Subsection Topological discrimination Information from complete event and/or ROE Thrust, B momentum, energy flow, Legendre, SFW, etc… Subsection Optimisation criteria S/B, significance, minimize systematics, CPU-related. linear vs. non-linear, treatment of correlations, etc… Subsection History Subsection Validations, systematics Main features : Various examples of MVA apps To be broadly referenced Feedback/interplay with physics chapters Main section editors Hidekazu Kakuno, José Ocariz Other contributors Joerg Stelzer contacted me recently, tbf Status writing ongoing need to synchronize with Belle inputs ± 8 pages

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 123rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Background suppression

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 133rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Background suppression

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 143rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Background suppression A few questions/comments/doubts Info relatively easy to find from my past expericence Very well documented in PhD theses Not easy to find the “right” plots on papers For the time being it’s very BaBar-oriented Will quickly hit the 6-page level Need to check the latest MVA’s used

Physics of the B-factories, MVA chapter 153rd workshop, Mainz, October 2010 Structure, manpower, timing issues Overall chapter/section structure designed to ensure global coherence and minimize redundancies suits the pedagogical purpose of the book Tagging to physics part; what about PID? Manpower a few important contacts yet to be established need both BaBar/Belle contributors on all sections Timing writing has started Frank’s 1 st draft soon uploaded I’d like to have 1 st iteration with Belle before uploading Ale gathering material Juerg will write in November interplay/feedback with physics chapters check for specific needs and redundancies
