© 2012 Autodesk Class Summary This class is for users who want to get more out of pressure pipe network design using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 software. We will cover general tips and tricks for increased productivity and present a step-by-step walkthrough of creating pressure network parts using tools included in Civil 3D, but that you might not know about.

© 2012 Autodesk Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to:  Learn the Civil 3D Pressure Pipe User Interface  Perform Horizontal and Vertical design  Employ tips to increase productivity  Work with catalogs and create parts lists in Civil 3D  Manage content using the Content Catalog Editor  Create your own content using the PublishPartContent command

© 2012 Autodesk Background

© 2012 Autodesk Pressure Parts Pipes – classified in “part families” based on material, end type, pressure class Fittings – parts that split or change direction of the flow: elbow, tee, wye, cross… Appurtenances – parts that throttle or control the flow: valve, pump, hydrant…

© 2012 Autodesk Terms  Deflection Allowable joint movement

© 2012 Autodesk Terms  Connector Point (ACP)  No object enabler  X’Ref enabled

© 2012 Autodesk Terms  Compass

© 2012 Autodesk Terms  Nominal Diameter: Size of a pipe  Class: Description of pipes ability to handle stresses, described either by strength, thickness or pressure.  Cut Length: Nominal length of pipe segment

© 2012 Autodesk Pressure Pipe Objectives  Watermain Design  Full 3D model  Content driven layout  Advanced Profile View editing

© 2012 Autodesk Working with Content

© 2012 Autodesk Content Overview Retrospective on (Gravity) Pipe Networks 1. Parametric content is powerful, but complex to define in Part Builder 2. Performance becomes an issue as models grow in scale (many parts) 3. Parts Lists increase the size of your drawing templates

© 2012 Autodesk Location of Content Default Installation (en-us) C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\C3D 2013\enu\Pressure Pipes Catalog\Imperial C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\C3D 2013\enu\Pressure Pipes Catalog\Metric What’s in the box? Imperial & Metric PushOn (AWWA) Imperial Flanged (AWWA) Imperial Mechanical Joint (AWWA)

© 2012 Autodesk Working with Catalogs Set Pressure Network Catalog Defaults to the content path Choose the Imperial or Metric folder Catalog database file dropdown contains all sqlite databases in that folder Command: SetPressureNetworkCatalog Copy the catalog folder path to the clipboard, use it to find the database in Content Catalog

© 2012 Autodesk Working with Parts Lists Settings | Pressure Network | Parts Lists | New… Add Pipes, Fittings, Appurts from the catalog Add by Material, Type and/or Size Apply default style and render material Command: CreatePressurePartsList Command: CreatePressurePartsListFull Pressure parts lists are lightweight. Don’t worry about bloating your drawing templates. Demo…

© 2012 Autodesk Content Types Pipes – classified in “part families” based on material, end type, pressure class Fittings – parts that split or change direction of the flow: elbow, tee, wye, cross… Appurtenances – parts that throttle or control the flow: valve, pump, hydrant… Defined with metadata only Defined with metadata and geometry

© 2012 Autodesk Content File Types File Types SQLITE - database containing part types, families and sizes (metadata) DWG - folder containing drawings with AutoCAD blocks IMG - png image used for preview in the catalog

© 2012 Autodesk Content Catalog Editor Manages pressure pipe content Explore the available content Edit the metadata on parts Import new parts Change the startup behavior in Tools | Options: “Open the last catalog" Edit and save before you create a parts list!

© 2012 Autodesk Content Catalog Editor Navigating the UI Finding the Imperial and Metric catalogs Searching and sorting Editing metadata Fid Manufacturer Demo…

© 2012 Autodesk Content Metadata Where does the metadata appear in Civil 3D and how is it used during layout? 1. Part Matching Nominal Diameter, Material, End Type 2. Layout - deflection and curvature Deflection, Cut Len, Min Flex Radius, Bend Angle 3. Design Validation Deflection, Diameter, Open connectors, Radius of curvature These values can be overridden in the part list!

© 2012 Autodesk Creating Custom Parts High Level Steps 1. Design (or Import) a 3D solid 2. Create a single line graphic as a polyline 3. Add Autodesk Connection Points 4. Run PublishPartContent to create a CONTENT package 5. Import the CONTENT package into the Content Catalog Editor 6. Create a parts list containing the new part 7. Create a pressure network using the parts list

© 2012 Autodesk Defining the Custom Part 1. Use the AutoCAD 3D Modeling workspace to work with your solid 2. Wireframe is helpful when defining the single line graphic (SLG) 3. Insert connections points at the ports Command: AutodeskConnectionPoint Remember to scale the solid appropriately Remember to UNION individual solids Remember to explode containing block, if any

© 2012 Autodesk PublishPartContent 1. Select a solid for publishing 2. Select a centerline ENTITY that represents the previously selected solid 3. Specify the measuring unit [Inches Millimeters] 4. Specify the Part Type [Cap Coupling Cross Elbow Hydrant Plug PUmp Reduce Tee Valve Wye ] 5. Select location to save CONTENT file Command: PublishPartContent For the best preview image – first resize the drawing window so that it is square!

© 2012 Autodesk Importing the Custom Part CONTENT format is a zip archive containing a single part DWG - block for 3D and SLG PNG - preview image (200x200 base size) XML - connection points and metadata Pipes are special case – CONTENT package is not needed during import Demo…
