5 Two-person role shift in narratives 0 Allows the narrator to show interactions between 2 characters in a story. 0 Adopts each character’s actions, manners, and feelings as well as comments 0 For one character, stay on left. For a different character, stay on right. 0 Example: Doctor character is to left and lumberjack is to right

6 Role shifting 0 When role shifting, turn your head just enough to complete the shift but not so much that the listener cannot see your facial expressions. 0 Only your upper body and head turn slightly to make the shift. 0 Do NOT move your feet!

32 Project: Children’s Book 0 The story should be about 4 - 6 minutes long 0 The story should not center on a sound, a play on words (pun), or the meaning of a particular word. 0 There should be no more than 3 characters in the story. 0 Choose an incident that can be communicated using what we have learned in class (all 3 years!!!). 0 The story must be told in first person, i.e. told from your point of view. 0 You will make a Children’s book (powerpoint) using ASL GLOSS

Body a) Begin with a transition b) Use role shift (at least 3 turns in the exchange) c) Integrate feelings and reactions d) Use the “object, action” word order e) Use transitions and modified verbs to move the story along III. Conclusion a) Begin with a transition b) Comment what you learned and/or what has happened since

34 Remember… 0 Rehearse the story… 0 Until you are completely comfortable 0 You need to memorize your story. 0 Telling the story… 0 Articulate your signs clearly and correctly 0 Move only your head, eyes, and shoulder when role shifting, not your whole body 0 Pace your story and engage your listeners 0 Make eye contact with everyone in the group 0 *Do NOT end your story with an announcement that you are done. (i.e. FINISH) 0 Your Audience should know that you are done by the way you wind down the story and bring it to a close.
