2 WHY DIDN’T AMERICA JOIN WW1 BEFORE 1917? -Isolationism! -They did not want to get involved in the affairs/problems of other countries

3 WHY DID THE USA JOIN THE WAR IN 1917? Lusitania The USA were angry about the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, but did not enter the war because Germany promised to remove submarines from the Atlantic. Unrestricted Submarine Warfare In 1917, Germany re-intrroduced ‘unrestricted submarine warfare’ in the Atlantic.

4 WHY DID THE USA JOIN THE WAR IN 1917? Zimmermann Telegram In 1917, the USA heard that Germany had sent a telegram to Mexico offering to help them invade the USA. Loans to Europe The USA had loaned millions of dollars to Europe. If they lost the war, the USA might not get their money back

5 WHY DID THE USA JOIN WORLD WAR 1? - They ignored their neutrality and policy of isolationism and entered the war.

7 LIST THREE WAYS IN WHICH EUROPE WAS DAMAGED BY THE FIRST WORLD WAR -Huge debt – many had borrowed money from the USA (especially Britain and France) – still borrowing -Britain owed $4,277 million -France owed $3,405 -Trade links and production of goods were disrupted -In many countries, mines, factories and commiunication links were destroyed

9 WHAT WERE THE EFFECTS OF WORLD WAR 1 ON THE USA? POSITIVE -Economy improved -Increased exports -Increased Production -Technology/industry improved -Employment opportunities for -Women -African-Americans NEGATIVE -Loss of life -100,000 men -They had abandoned isolationism -Problems in agriculture -Strikes etc -Discontent after war because of Laissez Faire policies -Wages reduced, unemployment etc.

10 WHAT DID FARMERS IN THE USA DO TO HELP EUROPEANS DURING THE WAR? -Expanded farms - took out loans to buy land and machinery -Ploughed up grazing land to use for wheat instead -Ate less -So much demand – they had high prices! – confident they could repay loans -30% world wheat, 75% corn, 55% cotton -Had to repay loans after war!

11 WHY DID THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT HAVE POLICIES OF LAISSEZ FAIRE? -It allowed companies to operate without too much government control -Wages, working hours etc -Could make a lot of money

12 WHAT EFFECT DID THE LAISSEZ FAIRE POLICIES HAVE ON THE USA AFTER THE WAR? -Problems -Prices of crops fell -Employers reduced wages -Discontent/strikes -People lost jobs -Hours of work reduced
