2   Singular subjects need a singular verb  Plural subjects need a plural verb Rule 1 (Review)

3   Plural subjects usually end in “s”  dogs, babies  Singular verbs usually end in “s”  runs, teaches Singular/Plural

4   When the subject of a sentence has two or more nouns connected by and, use a plural verb.  John and Jakes owns the house.  John and Jake own the house. Rule 2

5   When two or more singular nouns are connected by or or nor, use a singular verb.  Neither the book nor the pen is in the drawer.  Neither the book nor the pen are in the drawer.  Sarah or Alexis wears the dress.  Sarah or Alexis wear the dress. Rule 3

6   When a subject contains both a singular and a plural noun joined by or or nor, the verb should agree with the subject that is closer to the verb.  The cat or the dogs eat the steak.  The cat or the dogs eats the steak.  The kids or the babysitter clean the house.  The kids or the babysitter cleans the house. Rule 4
