5 Gent Prof dr A Govaert QUALITY MANAGEMENT (article 93) The higher education institutes (university colleges) and the universities are responsible for the internal and external quality management of the learning activities. –They permanently monitor the quality of the learning activities on their own initiative –They involve students, alumni and external experts from the professional field in processes of internal and external quality control

9 Gent Prof dr A Govaert ACCREDITATION The formal acknowledgement of a course based upon a decision of an independent organisation in which it is determined that the course meets previously fixed quality and course level standards Formal acknowledgement: –Independent organisation = Netherlands - Flemish organisation for accreditation (NVAO) The management of the institute applies for the accreditation Condition to finance the course by the government Condition to grant recognized diploma NVAO reports annually to the Flemish parliament a course

Educational objectives AspectsCriteria 1.1 Level and orientation: Bachelor academic edcuation The educational objectivities are focussed at getting the student to: master the general competences such as reasoning power, obtaining and processing information, the ability of critical reflection, creativity, being able to do simple managerial tasks, the ability to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions, as well as to specialists as to laymen and having the attitude of life-long learning. master general scientific competences such as having the attitude of research, having knowledge of research methods and techniques and being able to use these techniques adequately, the ability to collect relevant data that can influence the judgement of social, scientific and ethical questions, an appreciation of the insecurity, the ambiguity, and the limits of the knowledge and the ability to the problem guided initiating of research.

Educational objectives AspectsCriteria 1.1 Level and orientation: Master An advanced understanding and insight in scientific-disciplinary knowledge typical for a certain domain of sciences or arts, having insight in the latest knowledge of the field of study or parts of it, being able to comprehend and interpret the development of theories, being able to contribute knowledge to one of several parts of the field of study and having skills that are specific for the field of study such as designing, performing research, analysing and diagnosing. Either mastering the competences that are necessary to be able to perform research independently or to master the independent practice of arts at the level of junior researchers or artists, to master the general and specific professional competences that are necessary to amass scientific or artistic knowledge at the level of a junior professional..

27 Gent Prof dr A Govaert AspectsCriteria 1.2 Domain specific demands (The educational objectives (mentioned as end qualifications of the student) join the demands that are set by (foreigner) colleagues and the relevant work field to an education with regard to the domain (field of study/discipline and / or professional practice or art practice). They are, in case of legalized professions, in line with the regulations. The end qualifications for academic bachelor degrees and master degrees are derived from the scientific and / or artistic discipline, the international performed research and courses that are being considered to put the research into practice in the relevant professional field. Programme AspectsCriteria 2.1 Demands professional and academic alignment Academic aligned bachelor and master degree: Development of knowledge by students when there is an interaction between the education and the scientific research (including research in arts) within relevant disciplines. The programme matches with the developments in the relevant scientific discipline(s) by demonstrable connections with topical scientific theories. The programme guarantees the development of scientific research skills and / or the development and practice of the arts.. With certain courses there are demonstrable connections with the topical practice of the relevant professions.

29 Gent Prof dr A Govaert AspectsCriteria 2.2 Connection between objectives and the content of the programme The programme is an adequate realization of the end qualifications of the education, as to level, orientation and demands specific for the domain. The end qualifications are adequately translated towards learning objectives (parts) of the programme. The content of the programme offers students the possibility the achieve the end qualifications.. 2.3 Coherence programme Students take a coherent course programme as regards content. 30 Gent Prof dr A Govaert AspectsCriteria 2.4 Workload The actual period of study per academic year is being checked and reaches the standard which is 60 credits. It is possible to follow the programme because factors that hinder the learning process are being eliminated as much as possible. 2.5 Conditions of admission As for outline and content the programme fits in with the qualifications of the incoming students: Bachelor Diploma of secondary education, diploma of higher education of the short type with a complete curriculum, diploma of higher education for social promotion or a diploma or certificate that has similar qualifications and is recognized by law, decree, European guideline or another international agreement; Conditions that have been determined by the management of the institute for persons that do not have the necessary documents as mentioned above. The teaching methods match with the didactic 2.8 Evaluation and testing By means of evaluations, tests and exams it is being adequately tested and for students it is being tested if the students have realized the learning objectives (parts) of the programme. 32 Gent Prof dr A Govaert AspectsCriteria 2.9 Final project Master proof Before obtaining the master degree students have to make a final project, by which the student has to prove his/her analytic and synthetic capability or an independent problem solving capability on academic level or the artistic capability. The final project reflects the general critical reflection of the student ’ s intentions to do research.. The final project amounts to at least 1/5 of the total number of credits with a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 Programme (continuation)

33 Gent Prof dr A Govaert AspectsCriteria 3.1 Demands professional/academic alignment The course matches with the following criteria as regards to the effort of staff of a professional academic education: Academic courses The education is mainly supported by researchers who make a positive contribution to the development of the field (including research in arts). For some courses it is necessary that a sufficient amount of staff members have knowledge and insight as regard to the profession. 3.2 Quantity staffA sufficient amount of staff is being appointed to organize the course with the desired quality. 3.3 Quality staffThe staff is qualified for the educational, organizational realization of the programme.
