Nonrenewable Resources List the fossil fuels in the pictures. Are they renewable or non renewable? A C B

Formation of Fossil Fuels 2:26 As you watch, look for answers to these questions: 1.How do fossil fuels form? 2.Why are they nonrenewable? 3.What is one problem with using them?

Fossil fuels burn easily and produce a lot of heat. Open your textbook to page A 150. Read about how fossil fuels form and transfer energy.

On a sheet of paper draw the following chart. Take the Chart paper divide it into nine sections SourceTransformedMakesDisadvantage

Energy Packets Each group will be given a packet. Pull out the slips from the envelope. Work together as a group to organize slips into numerical order based on the picture. When you are finished, raise your hand so that your teacher can come and check your work. New Packet – repeat the instructions above.

Coal Power Plant Directions: Pull out the slips of paper from the file. Work with your group to find what each number is. Use page 150A – 152 A 1.Coal – Carbon based substance formed over time from fossilized plants. This is the input to the system. 2.Stack – A tower that emits exhaust from the combustion process. 3.Boiler – This device heats water to produce steam. 4.Steam - Produced when water is boiled. It is the vapor phase of water. 5.Turbine – Spinning blades in this device are turned by steam and spins the generator. 6.Generator – This part is turned by the turbine, generating electromagnetic energy. 7.Electricity – This is the final output of the system. It can also be described as electrons in motion.

How would you fill in the chart for a Coal Power Plant? Energy SourceTransformedMakesDisadvantage CoalCrushed and burned. Steam produces turn Turbines that work generators. ElectricityCreates greenhouse gases. Uranium (Nuclear)Uranium goes through nuclear fission and is used to heat water to turn turbines and generate Electricity
