Databases & Biblio- graphies Session 2 Clemens Gresser Cambridge University Library / Pendlebury Library

Brief Overview Session 2: Exercise 2 / comparison of your searches Practical 1 Comparison between various resources Search Scenarios and hints Practical 2?

Exercise 2 / comparison of your searches

Searches Practical 1: Conduct your own search (using keywords from task 1 & 2): -with Scopus -Google Scholar How do these results compare with your previous searches? !!! 15 minutes !!!

Comparison of some bibliographic tools (databases), searched in 2007! 3 search scenarios: 1.'indeterminacy with regard to performance practice‘ 2.literature about/by one composer: Christian Wolff (*1934) 3.Finding publications by one scholar: Claire Taylor-Jay (CTJ)

Comparison of some bibliographic tools (databases) Criteria: A.Relevance. B.Diversity C.Uniqueness D.Scope Number of different sources/publications. Unique items for a particular database -> why important? a)range of years of coverage b)range of languages

Finding publications by CTJ: [D] Coverage & [E] Comprehensiveness Coverage (years) Comprehens. (within coverage / beyond coverage) ratios of comprehens. MI2000-2005 3 out 7 / 3 out of 10 0.5 / 0.4 RILM1998-2004 4 out of 8 / 4 out of 10 0.42 / 0.3 WoK2000-20073 out of 9 / 3 out of 10 0.33 / 0.3

Conclusions – RILM RILM only e-resource used here which creates main entry for multi-authored publications, PLUS individual items within the volume: “duplicating” information and increasing the number of hits more information/data needs to be browsed might confuse novice users

RILM Searching for Name in [Surname], [Firstname(s)] e.g. Claire Taylor-Jay can be different to Taylor-Jay, Claire

Search author = AU field

Conclusions : RILM RILM = only bibliographic tool specialising in music and providing abstracts free full-text search = more results than just on basis of keywords clearer terminology = good for generic search terms (“indeterminate music”) more diverse publications

Conclusions: Music Index Music Index - has a fair number of results, often also including non- mainstream academic publications

Conclusions : BHI BHI – lower number of results, but high accuracy Offers search in non-humanities but also has an art database -> good for interdisciplinary/cross- media art research

Conclusions : WoK WoK – is “okay” for non-specialist database, and can surprise with 1 or 2 unique results

Conclusions: Oxford Music Online (OMO) Oxford Music Online – search function to “search bibliographies” only can help, but search not accurate (e.g. HELMUTH Christian Wolff, not CW )

Findings 2011 RILM → got many more results, cont. increase in record as non-commercial project! RILM → most diverse number of publications

Findings 2011 – slide 2 Music Index – seems to have got more polyglot than in 2007 “people” search option = very successful

Overall conclusions Searches prove: To find the whole, systematic output of publications all possible tools should be used

Remaining questions Elsevier's Scopus? (versus World of Knowledge?) How would Google Scholar have scored? Google Books? incl. Magazine contents! Mendeley ? Google Scholar Citations?

Searches Practical 2: Use the same search terms for searching full- text of: -JSTOR & -Google Books How do these results compare? And: how do the compare to RILM and Music Index?
