1
Unit 4 Warming up and reading Global warming
2
Do you know how energy is produced? How many sources of energy can you list?
3
Wind energy is used as power to produce electricity. windmills
4
Electricity is produced by burning coals. coal power stations
5
Oil is refined and made pure. oil refineries
6
Nuclear energy is converted into electricity. nuclear power plant
7
pieces of equipment on a roof that collects energy from sunlight in order to heat water and produce electricity solar panels
8
Water are kept back and raised its level for irrigation or for producing electricity. hydro-electric dams
9
geothermal ( 地热 的 ) energy plant Electricity is generated from hot dry rocks.
10
An energy source is “renewable” when supplies of it never run out and “non-renewable” when one day they will run out. Which energy sources on your list are renewable and which are non-renewable?
11
Non-renewable Renewable Coal Oil Natural gas Uranium Wind (wind power) Sun (solar energy) Water (hydro-electric power) Plant waste (biomass energy) Hot springs or geysers (geothermal energy) The sea (tidal energy) Fossil fuels
12
What are fossil fuels? Ancient animal and plant material below the surface of the earth with a high carbon content, such as coal, oil and natural gas, which can be burnt to produce energy. Also known as non- renewable energy because once they are used they have gone forever; they cannot be renewed.
13
Have you ever seen a greenhouse?
14
How does it work? The air inside is warm because the glass trap the heat from the sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period.
15
What are the “greenhouse gases”? What do you think greenhouse gases do?
16
greenhouse effect
17
What are the “greenhouse gases”? In the atmosphere surrounding the earth there are gases, which are called “greenhouse gases”, including carbon dioxide, methane( 甲烷, 沼气 ) and water vapor.
18
What’s greenhouse effect? Greenhouse gases perform the same function as the glass in a greenhouse --- they trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm.
19
Global warming / The warming of the earth. Skim the text and find out the main topic of the article.
20
What is the purpose of the first paragraph? To introduce the topic. What are the diagrams for? To illustrate points by providing evidence.
21
Read the text quickly and answer the questions: 1.Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine? 2.What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article? 3.What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another? 4.What are the two graphs about? 5.What is the main topic of the article?
22
Sophie Armstrong wrote the magazine article. The name of the magazine is “Earth care”. 2. What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article? They are Dr. Janice Foster, Charles Keeling and George Hambley. 1. Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine?
23
3. What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another? There are some very different attitudes among scientists towards this issue. Some think the effects will be terrible, while some others believe that we should not worry about it.
24
Choose the best answers. 1.Who found out the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1977? A. Dr. Janice Foster. B. Charles Keeling. C. George Hambley. D. Sophie Armstrong. B
25
D 3. The author probably agrees that ______. A. actually global warming is good for man B. we should do nothing about the global warming C. catastrophes will happen if the globe keeps on warming D. a lot remains to be found out about the effects of global warming.
26
The different ideas between Dr. Janice Foster & George Hambley Dr. Janice FosterGeorge Hambley Carbon dioxide has caused the global temperature to _______. An increase of five degrees would be a __________ and could be ___________. More carbon dioxide is a ________ thing, which makes crops ____________ and will encourage __________ __________________. go up catastrophe very serious positive produce more a greater range of animals
27
1. The temperature last century didn’t increase much. 2. Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. 3. Janice Foster believes that she can measure the future global rise in temperature. True or false T T F
28
4. The rise in carbon dioxide is causing a steady increase in global warming. 5. George Hambley believes that global warming will do good rather than harm to the earth. 6. It is clear what the effects of global warming will be. T T F
29
Construction Part 1 (1) Introduce a debate over the issue of global warming. Main idea of each part
30
Part 2 (2-5) How global warming comes about. Part 3 (6) List two different attitudes among scientists towards global warming. Part 4 (7) It’s up to readers to think and decide whether people should do something about global warming or not.
31
What are the effects of global warming? Discussion
32
A : We shall do something about global warming. B : We shall do nothing about global warming. Debate
33
1.Review the text and pay attention to the use of it. 2.Find out the important and difficult words and expressions to you.
