Something to think about………. What if..... ……the area of a rectangle is 24cm² and perimeter is 22cm. What are its dimensions? ……the area of a rectangle in cm² is equal to its perimeter in cm, what could the dimensions be? ……you wake up one morning and there are no numbers? …….there were no straight lines any more? ……everything shrinks to half its size, apart from you?

Positivity About Maths We as adults must develop a more positive culture of maths at home if we are to foster love of and enthusiasm for maths: Talk positively about maths. NEVER say to a child: ‘Oh well I was no good at maths at school so daddy/mummy will have to help you.’ Link it to everyday tasks-shopping, cooking, activity/TV times, buses, house numbers, car number plates etc. See ‘Ideas for parents at home’ handout (Don’t Roll 1) A belief in your child! We promote a belief in school when a child says ‘I can’t do that,’ we explain that they ‘can’t do it YET’ but with help and practice they will be able to do it. The basis of successful learning is self- confidence and belief and this must be developed alongside the required knowledge, understanding and skills.

Key Changes to the Maths Curriculum Overall, the levels of expectations have been raised, especially in relation to number and recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division number facts. A strong emphasis has been placed on mental and written calculation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Many mathematics topics are now introduced at an earlier stage and taught at an accelerated pace. Eg: Year 1 children will now be expected to recall and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20 and be able to count to and write numbers to 100, children in Yr 2 will have to tell time to 5 minute intervals. Some new topics have also been introduced, such as Roman numerals (Yr 3 onwards), identifying parts of a circle, recognising binary numerals and a more formal introduction to algebra in Year 6.
