In Provins, to go to school, we can take a bus, a car or we can go on foot or by bike. There are 10 school in Provins: one of these is ours, Lelorgne de Savigny Junior high school. It is located Uptown in the Medieval centre of the Historic Town at 1 Svignt Street. Our school is surrounded by a great wall. The structure is old, the first thing you notice when you arrive is a large white gate. At the center of the school there is the playground. Our school has 2 floors and a basement, 30 classrooms, 1 gymnasium and a canteen (it’s a self service).

Timetable: In France, the students' timetable is very different from the others countries : we work Mondays through Fridays and always have our Wednesdays afternoons off. In our school, pupils start their lessons at 8:00 am but have to arrive at 7:45 because of the commuting. We study until 11am or noon (it's depends of our subjects) and then, we eat at our canteen. We have one hour and a half to eat and after we return to the afternoon lessons with our class. We have the same class all year long. The afternoon lessons finish at 4:30 or at 5:30 pm. The 6 th and 7 th grades often finish at 3:30 pm. The 8 th and 9 th grades often finish at 5:30 pm. French pupils can take different optional lessons like Greek, Latin, Spanish, A-level English (called Euro English) and A- level Mathematics lessons (called Maths +). Our timetable can change, because of the absence of teachers. Some subjects are taught together (regrouped lessons) like History and Geography, Chemistry and Science... In France, we have many different schools: - the Kindergarden (three or four years long from 3 to 5 years old ) - the Primary school ( five years long from 6 to 10 years old) - the Secondary school ( four years long from 11 to 15 years old ) -the High school (three years long from 16 to 18 years old) We are in Secondary school, in 9 th grade and at the end of the year we have an exam which is very important named “le Diplome National du Brevet” and in England its name is the GCSE: The Brevet is a big evaluation of History, Geography, French and Mathematics classes. We have a training in March and the real exam is on the 23 rd to 24 th of June. Together with the Brevet we have an Art history exam: It's a folder of 5 works of Art about a theme (for example : racism, love, the Second World War). We can work in groups of two or alone but we need to present our work in an oral examination.

In France, we have got two sorts of schools : the public schools and the private schools. Our Junior High: Lelorgne de Savigny is a public school. Public schools are free, compulsory and secular (no mention to any religion whatsoever). That is why there are no religion lessons in our school: it is called laicity or secularism. Secularism is the principle of the separation of the school and of the State. The State is neutral regarding people's religions. Each individual is free to believe or not believe in God. In our public school, we don't study the catholic religion, or the muslim religion, or the Jewish religion or any another religion. But it is different in Private Schools. In Private School, pupils study religion, especially the Catholic religion. There is a private secondary school and a high school in Provins named Sainte Croix (Saint Cross). Pupils attend a mass once a week, and they often study religious texts. In fact, they don't apply the principle of secularism.

Homework In our school, we have a lot of homework every day. Sometimes, the teachers are not here, so they can't give us homework :) But the week after the holidays, is always when we have the most homework. For us, homework is : Mathematics and History-Geography exercises ; French essays and grammar exercise ; Reports (written or spoken) in different subjects (Latin, French, English, Spanish...) ; Learn our written lessons every day. In 9 th grade, in the middle of the school year (February or March), we have an official Practice Test called “Brevet Blanc” and at the end of the school year (end of June) we have the “National Brevet” which is a national exam that every student take at the end of Junior High School (like the GCSE in England). During this final school year, all the marks that we get are added and counts for the national diploma.

We have different activities and sport associations in our school. For instance: - The Sport association: it offers different sports (gymnastics, handball, table tennis, athletics and running) for girls and boys. - The Clubs and extra- activities: like origami, chess, manga, choir, drawing, reading, computer programming, role play games. These activities are directed by the teachers and by the pupils. - The school Library: we have a teacher who managed the school library and helps us in our researches and homework or gives us advices on what to read.

Representative pupils (or delegates) Every year in every class, the pupils designate two representative students (in French = délégués). We make a vote, and the two persons who received the most votes are elected. They represent our class in the class councils. The class council is a meeting where there are all the teachers with the director of the school. They decide which pupils pass in the next grade or repeat. The delegate can intervene in these class councils : he/she has to defend his/her classmates and writes notes to tell everyone about the decisions and the results.

To start with, in Lelorgne de Savigny, almost every pupil eats at the canteen, but there are some pupils who eat at home. The pupils who eat at the canteen are named half-boarder and the others are named extern, or «day pupils ». In our school, we don't have the right to take something to eat in the playground because otherwise, we will leave so much waste in the playground. In Savigny, the canteen is not very tasty but it is edible. We have got a running order because it is easier for the supervisors. Some pupils do sports activities between the meal, so they eat before the others. It is named « AS » and club. Every last school day of December, we get a special meal: the Christmas lunch. It is better than usual because we eat salmon, foie gras, fruit juices and coke, French fries, turkey and for sure, chocolate and cakes! Our canteen is very small, so, the supervisors have to anticipate the rush and make us eat faster. The supervisors call the different classes then, we line up, and when they call us, we finally come inside and begin our meal.
