Time to Surprise With A Bedroom Makeover Read all about the how to and why to of a bedroom makeover, complete with designer furnishings, fancy wallpaper, decorative wall textures and quirky accessories. It could be retro or traditional, depending on your taste, style and budget. Our bedroom is one of the most important places, not just in our homes but our lives too. It’s that one space to put up our feet; to relax; to rejuvenate; simply put – to be our self in our very own space. An individual’s bedroom reflects their personality, style and comfort, unique to them. On average, we spend one-third of our lives in this room.

Time for a makeover “When” is it a good time to do a bedroom makeover? I’d say the festive season like New years, since it’s a time when one spends the most hours in deep cleaning it, re-painting and also buying new things for the house. It’s also a time when great discounts are in the offing and loads of Christmas fairs are on in every nook and cranny of the town where one can find some awesome handmade artifacts. So why not to use your own home making tips and ideas to do this make-over. Some of my most quirky and random buys have been from flea markets and melas.

Energizing the room Another reason for a makeover could be to improve the Vastu of your room. Sometimes, the troubles in our lives can be rectified by using the laws of this science, that deals with directions and flow of energy in rooms and spaces. So if you believe in Vastu, then this is the excuse for you to do up a makeover.

How do you do it? And “how” to do it depends on one’s taste, budget and time that one can afford to invest in it. One can go in for a complete change with new furniture and furnishings if the budget permits. The various furniture & furnishing stores abound with some great range of items and some even have an in-house interior designer who give out free consultation for your makeover and advise on styles and trends. I can share a few ideas here that are inexpensive, depend more on your creative instincts and are pretty easy to do.

How do you do it? Fun with furniture One of the simplest ways to change the way one’s room looks is to re- arrange the furniture in a different layout. Exchange the setting of the bed and the furniture opposite to it with each other. Try draping a colored shawl or a throw at the end of the bed in winters to brighten up the room or can put it on the back of the sofa/armchair in the room. Adding a thick woolen rug in winters and replacing the same with a light cotton durrie in summers can instantly transform the look. One can look for quirky and inexpensive accessories at flea markets like photo-frames, lamps, cushions, candles, etc which can be added to the décor quite easily.

Fancy Furnishings The market is full of a varied selection of designer bed-sheets that you can mix-match with attractive cushions and shams – all available at your local furnishing stores and haat markets. You could break the monotony in furnishings by combining prints with embroidered fabrics, thus ensuring texture and richness to the décor.

Curtain Call Having two sets of curtains – one for summers and one for winters is a great idea. With the range of designer curtains available in the market today, one is spoilt for choice. You could select thicker and darker colored window dressings for the summers in a rich floral pattern to keep out the summer sun, keeping the room cool. Winter selection could be in a lighter fabric and bright colors to enliven the dreary sunlight with some cheer. Your selection could vary from smart stripes to playful floral to sturdy solid colors in cool cottons, rich silks, smooth velvets, shiny satins or suave suede– depending on your taste, décor style and budget.

Wonder Walls Dressing up just one wall of the room can also spruce up the decor overnight. There are 2-3 ways of doing this. Paint: One could add a splash of bright color to one wall and paint the rest three in muted tones of the same shade or a contrast that would simply highlight the bright color. Stencil: Adding a border or motif by painting a stencil design over the walls would again make the walls unique and different. Today there is a range of stencil designs being offered by many wall paint companies and some even customize your design into a stencil for you. Wallpaper: It’s really easy to put wallpaper on the wall and you can undertake this on your own as a small DIY project over the weekend. The selection available in the markets today boggles the mind.
