It’s about what is right for students to be college and career ready in a global society PARCC is written to measure student mastery towards what we value about the Standards and teaching and learning It’s Not About The Test !
3
Assuming PARCC can fulfill its promise of being an accurate measure of Common Core standards, it will significantly improve academic assessment in Illinois.
5

Administrative Considerations for All Students Use of testing spaces other than regular classrooms Testing session varied Small groups Frequent breaks Adaptive seating
12
Tool, support, scaffold, or preference activated by any student Universal Design features Onscreen, in a toolbar or a menu Accessibility Features for All Students
13
Accessibility Features – Turned On in Advance Small number of students requiring additional accessibility Current options: answer masking, color contrast, text- to-speech for math These features are identified in advance through an individual plan
14
Accommodations Available only to students with an individualized education plan (IEP, 504, ELL) Identified in advance Requested accommodations must be available to student on a day-to-day basis, NOT just for the PARCC assessment
15
Presentation Accommodations Screen Reader, Braille, Large Print, Paper-based, Text-to-Speech for ELA Calculator, Word Prediction, Scribing Response Accommodations Extended time Changes in test administration Timing/Scheduling Accommodations
16
Unique/Emergency Accommodations Unique situations Emergency situations Small number of students
17
Accessibility Changes for 2016 Blank Scratch Paper – at least 1 sheet “Flag Items for Review” now called “Bookmark” General Masking – NEW! Students will use an on-screen tool to create custom masks Highlight Tool – color options will change based on color contrast option selected “Line Reader” now called “Line Reader Mask” Embedded Spell Check – NEW!

Accessibility & Accommodations – Changes for 2016 Additional test administration guidance provided for before, during, and after testing activities related to A&A Accessibility FeatureAdministration Guidelines r Text-to-Speech for the Mathematics Assessments (SR/PNP) Before Testing: Identification for SR/PNP: Student’s SR/PNP must have Text-to- Speech selected to activate the feature on the platform. Once a student is placed into a test session, the student will be assigned a form with embedded text-to-speech. Proctor caching is strongly encouraged. If this content is not cached, it may present challenges for students during testing. Volume level must be determined prior to testing; once the test session begins, the volume level cannot be changed. Student will not have access to volume control in the secure TestNav environment. Test Administrator Training: Refer to the Text-to-Speech Tutorial on parcc.pearson.com for full training on tool functionality During Testing: The student selects the “Text-to-Speech Player” icon on the toolbar on the right side of the screen. The test is read aloud to the student using embedded text-to-speech software. The student may pause and resume the audio. To choose a speed (slow, normal, fast); select the “Text-to-Speech Settings” icon. Once the test begins, the volume level cannot be changed. Student must be tested in a separate setting if unable to wear headphones.

Illinois will administer an online science assessment to students in grades 5, 8 and once in high school The high school assessment will be course-based and aligned to the content of Biology I. The testing window will be open throughout May, and we will try to open the window earlier in April, if possible, in order to provide additional flexibility to schools. We have an item-sharing agreement with the Office of the State Superintendent in District of Columbia, and we will be working in partnership with D.C. as we build our NGSS-aligned assessment. We are currently in the process of finalizing the forms for this upcoming spring, and we anticipate providing additional details about the assessment in early February. Illinois Science Assessment

What Can I Do to Get Ready? Include in my daily classroom activities skills required on the PARCC assessment - focus on evidence, real-world connections, increased rigor, etc. Take the practice tests to fully understand what the students are expected to know Have my students complete the practice tests, sample items, and tutorial to become familiar with the testing platform and format Check frequently for updates, new releases, and clarifications from the PARCC and ISBE website Adjust assessments in my classroom to better mirror the format of the PARCC assessment
23
REMINDERS Room set-up - Prohibited items include: posters, maps, charts, and displays that define, explain, or illustrate terms or concepts mathematical formulas graphic organizers multiplication tables word lists Definitions writing formulas
24
REMINDERS Room set-up – Computers: Students will all be taking the same test. Room should be arranged to prevent students from seeing other student’s screens. If this can’t be accomplished by adjusting the seating, then barriers need to be used between work stations.
