2 CELEBRATING POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis is the inspiration for our Global Academy MISSION Pope Francis Academy will ensure that students reach their full potential by providing a rigorous curriculum, combining academic excellence, social emotional learning, a focus on global issues and a strong Catholic foundation. (Draft mission – mission will be developed by PFGA stakeholders)

3 WHY GLOBAL STUDIES? After considering several options, Global Studies was chosen as the focus for the school. PFGA will …  Prepare students for the global future  Develop global citizens and engaged leaders  Develop critical, creative and analytical thinkers  Develop language and research skills  Ensure understanding of global issues / challenges  Build on current focus on STEM education  Respond to the Pope’s encyclical – A Call to Action  Provide a lens for delivering a strong Catholic education

4 GLOBAL STUDIES Global Studies is the lens through which the curriculum will be delivered. The Global Studies program will provide: An awareness and an understanding of global issues and challenges An awareness of other world religions, cultures and international issues

5 GLOBAL STUDIES PROVIDES An ability to communicate in more than one language, work in a global environment and use information from global sources Appreciation of different cultures, necessary in the world of increasing diversity An understanding of the importance of global citizenship

6 PFGA – HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM SCHOOLS IN THE AREA A global studies program focused on issues identified by Pope Francis, such as, climate change, world hunger, poverty, racism, clean water and family life Rigorous curriculum based on Common Core State Standards / OCS benchmarks Coherent and well articulated curriculum across grade levels Revised and updated instructional practices, materials and texts Attention to social emotional development Teacher collaboration on developing global studies units Ongoing intensive professional development for teachers and principals

7 CURRICULUM WORLD LANGUAGES Curriculum aligned to world readiness standards for languages Students will learn to communicate effectively in more than one language in order to function in a variety of situations for multiple purposes. Students will be able to interact with cultural competence and understanding.

9 CURRICULUM - RELIGION Students engage in religion as an academic subject Learning prayers, sacramental preparation, scripture, history and traditions of the Church Daily classroom instruction provides students with an opportunity to grow in their faith and learn what it means to live as a Catholic Students will engage in service projects to reinforce the path that Pope Francis has called us to follow Religious education will nurture students’ sense of respect and responsibility Students will participate in weekly Mass and will be involved in the development of the liturgy

11 CORE CURRICULUM ELA True balance of informational and literary texts Students build knowledge about the world (content) through text Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text Students read increasingly complex text and participate in close reading of text Students write in all content areas Students build vocabulary that will transfer to content areas

13 CORE CURRICULUM MATH Curriculum is well articulated across grade levels Teachers value multiple approaches to solving problems Teachers focus deeply on concepts that are prioritized in CCSS Students are expected to use math and choose appropriate applications when solving real world problems Adequate time is allocated for math instruction (60-80 minutes) Materials are aligned to CCSS

15 CORE CURRICULUM SOCIAL STUDIES Instruction focused on concepts and content knowledge and the teacher serves as facilitator Global studies themes are embedded in the content Students conduct investigations using multiple sources Students develop disciplinary literacy skills and social science skills in tandem Students integrate and apply skills and content knowledge Materials include primary source documents
