Population Tanzania Mainland: 43,625,354 Female: 22,386,041 Male: 21,239,313 Area size: 945,087 sq.km, the largest country in East Africa Economy: Per Capita income around 600 USD GDP growth Rate is between 6 -7% Life expectancy: Male 58 yrs, Female 61 yrs Official Language:Swahili and English 4

7 Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is responsible for managing the delivery of health care and social welfare in the country Its duties is to manage and provide services on: Prevention treatment rehabilitation and Social Welfare Provision of these services is done in conjunction with the PMO Regional Administration and Local Government(PMORALG), private sector, religious institutions, public agencies, individuals and other stakeholders. ASSESSMENT OF NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM – BUILDING BLOCKS…2 Establishment of Health Systems Strengthening Unit in the Directorate of Policy and Planning Human Resources Increased enrolment of Human resource for health students from 3,025 in 2007/08 to 7,458 in 2011/12 Increased recruitment of health workers from 4,812 in 2007/08 to 7,028 in 2011

ASSESSMENT OF NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM – BUILDING BLOCKS…3 Health Services Infrastructure Number of health facilities increased from 5,379 (2005/06) to 6,663 (2011/12), aims at having health facility to a distance not more than 5 km. Immunization Increased coverage from 90% in the year 2010/11 to 95% in the year 2011/12. 14

ASSESSMENT OF NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM – BUILDING BLOCKS…4 Malaria Reduction of Malaria prevalence by 40% through implementation of Malaria Strategic Plan. RCH Reduction of under five mortality rate from 91 (2007/08) to 81 (2010) per 1000 live births. Reduction of MMR from 578 (1999) to 454/100,000 live births (2010).

ASSESSMENT OF NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM – BUILDING BLOCKS…5 HIV and AIDS HIV prevalence rate has droped from 5.7% in 2010 to 5.1% in 2013 TB Deaths due to tuberculosis, have dropped from 8% in 2006 to 4.9% in 2010. Medicine and Medical Supplies Improved delivery of medicine and medical supplies in health facilities.

Council Health service board and Health Governing Committees Financing Establishment of Health Care Financing Strategy Improved health financing system and schemes through prepayments e.g. NHIF, NSSF,CHF,TIKA 17

HEALTH NEEDS AND POLICY PRIORITIES FY 2014-15 According to 2014/15 budget guideline priority areas are going to be as follows: - Implementation of sectoral programs and strategies aimed at improving service delivery, including reducing maternal morbidity levels. To improve prevention, treatment, training and fighting infectious diseases, non-communicable and priorities that were not treated. Construction and maintenance of infrastructure to offer services as well as strengthening the referral system Strengthening training institutions for professionals in the health sector and social welfare. 18

Conclusion and Way Forward Establish Health Care Financing Stratage where by all citizens will be required to have Health Insurance (Universal coverage) 19
